PS: this is my first ‘lugged ‘ cover plate, anything I should be extra careful of?.? Pete Those lugs can be fragile, especially if it hasn't been opened for a long time, so twist the coverplate very carefully until you are sure they are not going to snap off. Shine On Michael

Thanks Michael, will be VERY careful. Pete
There is a piezo (?) fitted to the cone, so it has been opened in living memory.

Looks like four extra screws were added to keep the cover plate on. Maybe some of the hooks have been broken off already. On my '31, there is only one screw holding on the cover plate.

I was going to say exactly the same thing !! As you try to turn the coverplate, it doesn’t seem to want to move. So, you put a bit more force ... nothing. A bit more - then all of a sudden, a sudden jump and heavy click and it loosens off ! A bit scary the first couple of times you do it ! Might be easier if the hooks are broken off. Here is my all-brass 1932 Style N with hooks coverplate : (pictured by Steve Evans, after he finished working on it some years ago) Attachments:

Cone came out ok, looks like some (all? ) of the damage was done by someone ( a child?) pushing a paintbrush through the c/plate holes. Paintbrush, pencil and stick found inside. Also last time someone did some work ( the neck is perfect) the screws into the neckstick through the well we’re left out. ( there are 2 posts on the outside of the well that are nailed in) Pete

And how many hooks were left on the coverplate ?
Looks like an older, NRP non Hot-Rod cone to me, I think. Looks too new to be the original 1930's cone.

All the hooks are still there, yes the cone does look ‘new’. The biscuit and saddle are thick and clumsy, not like early NRPs. As the very thick saddle has been cut right down I have replaced both with a thinner maple biscuit and box wood saddle. The cone has gone back to (almost) it’s proper shape. When Busker stopped selling guitars I was given a stack of damaged cones so I have some practice at removing dents. Though this cone is about the worst I’ve seen! Pete It’s back together and I have done a 2min video, for technical reasons I can’t put it on the forum ( l have to wait till a young person gets home who understands this sort of thing!)

Here it it is, recorded on an iPad , in my kitchen so it sounds a little harsh, the live sound is better than the recording. The customer was coming to collect it so no time for a ‘proper’ recording.

The screws were very neatly done, and matched the centre one, I guess we will never know when it was done. Pete

A bit of insurance to keep the coverplate from rattling, buzzes....

Anybody ever seen another case of missing screws on the sound well (at 12 and 6H) along the stick ? Maybe the pic was shot in process of repair, and proper screws added later ? Just look at it because it means that all the weight is atached to the neck by the fingerboard only, a lateral shock may be dangerous...nobody wants to shock an old lady of course.
