Dear Michael and other forum members, I have just acquired another reso and wonder if anyone can identify the maker. It appears to be of high quality, but there are no serial numbers or labels anywhere to be found. The instrument came to me with a badly damaged cover plate and crushed cone. The cone looks to be possibly a Quarterman judging by the refined finish. I have attached pics . Hope you can solve the mystery!

It's a cheap Johnson (or similar). The lopsided f-holes are the giveaway. Probably worth about £200. I doubt it's a quarterman cone - recording king cones look identical and sound terrible. TT

The back is typical of Ozark and others made in Korea Pete
Though they usually have a stamped spiral on the cone

Hi TT and Pete, Many thanks for your help.
So far then, it looks as if this instrument comes from the Far East and therefore so does the cone.
Please keep the opinions coming as it would be nice to nail this one down to an exact model.

The cone looks very odd, can you post a pic with it viewed from the side? A cone damaged like yours can sometimes be reshaped, but it does not look like one of the better sounding cones. Quarterman have a good name for making Dobro style cones, but I have never heard anyone praise their biscuit cones. A good cone will undoubtedly give it a voice, but as the rest of the parts are early Korean it will probably never be as powerful as one of the better resos built in China ( I think Michael Messer could help get you one) Pete

Hi Pete, In order to check the guitar out in its current state, I managed to push the cone back to a reasonable shape. I played the instrument and am happy with the sound considering the damage. By the way the body is brass and has pleasant mellow tone. Attached are the pics of the cone as requested. On closer inspection, I don't think this is a Quarterman cone although the spun finish seems to be well executed.

I've scrutinized the headstock and think I have found a very faint remnant of the maker's name. It appears to be a Saga instrument. Saga is written to the left and the Viking ship logo is to the right. I don't know if this is a clue to date the guitar because, as far as I know, resonators supplied by Saga are under the Regal brand. Can anyone shed any light on this please?
