New to this so I hope I am in the right place. Should an Amistar Model N have a spider in it, the cone that is fitted has raised grooves that radiate down and around the cone are there better ones please?

A photo would be of benefit to illustrate your concerns.

Hi Ism44, Welcome to our forum If what you have is an Amistar Style N, it is a nickel plated brass bodied 14 fret National-style guitar with a 9.5" biscuit style cone. It is not a Dobro-style guitar and it should not have a spider. I believe that what you are calling raised grooves that radiate down and around are actually spirals in a 9.5" National-style cone. Lee is correct that without photos we cannot be sure of what you are asking about. I reckon I'm not far off though. Shine On Michael

Thanks for the quick replies, you are spot on Michael with your thoughts they are of course spirals. I think it needs a new cone as the guitar sounds flat and not very loud, I have fitted a National neck pick-up and that overcame the loss of sound but would sooner get it back to how it should be. Any information on where to purchase the best cones from would be helpful.
Keep safe Rob

Hi Rob,
My pleasure.
Before offering any more advice, let's see some photos of the guitar showing as much detail of the setup as you can.
What makes you think the cone is damaged?

When I got the guitar it had a rather Heath Robinson pickup fitted and there is a 3-4 mm cut in the outer edge where a cable came through and it was turned back, I straightened that out but it obviously is a weakness. I am surprised that the biscuit pressure is not adjustable by suspending it with screws from the hand cover, might have a go at that.

Hi ism44 welcome to the forum. Briefly and without going into great detail its the string pressure on the bridge/biscuit/cone that gives a resonator its tone, that pressure would be adjusted as part of the setup of the guitar, the break angle being one way to judge and generally that's partly controlled by the height of the bridge. Other things come into play of course. Other forum members will be chipping in I'm sure so hold off on any drilling for the time being! πΈπ
Best wishes to you all, John

Is there a hole cut in the resonator cone for a pickup cable? Shine On Michael
