That was the one up until recently was with Ron at No tom, when Ron had it in the Sale over the years it crept down to around £1400 although normally it was around £1800, it sold recently but took a few years, I was tempted. The Valco pickup and the lipstick I may well have supplied Dave years ago, I tried this within no Tom and the Valco is not at 100% so it could be magnets or the top plate is affecting the pole piece adjustment, other than that in the Koa and the calton case it is lovely. I already have one is what I kept reminding myself when I kept looking at it in Rons shop, but have recently decided to expand the collection as have all the parts for another at some time or other.

Fantastic looking guitar, though the listing says Solid Koa, looks like a koa top on mahogany. (Sorry for the ‘nit-picking’ ) Pete

Yes they were mostly mahogany bodies routed leaving the centre block with a separate top, this one interesting does not have a maple/sycamore neck like the majority.

This guitar was made for a friend of mine in 2002 that loved my King Caster and was played by me on one or two shows so I didn't have to change tunings on stage. I had my own King Caster on stage and this one. Here's a photo of me playing it at the Shepherds Bush Empire (BBC TV Theatre) in 2002 opening for Dr John. After the show the wonderful Dr John was interested in both of the King Casters and I think he played one of them. The wood cover on the pickup was my idea because I don't like the sharp edges of the Supro pickups against my hand. As an instrument it it a beautiful piece, and I imagine with twenty years of mellowing it is even more wonderful. reverb.com/uk/item/49358265-dave-king-slide-master-tele-style-solid-koa-slide-guitar-1-of-7-2002-natural-koa-1950s-ohau-pickupShine On Michael PS: What I find particularly weird is that the current owner of this King Guitar has the identical rug to mine. This photo looks like it could have been taken at my house, but it wasn't. Spooky!

(Sorry for the ‘nit-picking’ ) Pete You are correct Pete, it is a koa top on a mahogany body, just like mine is a flame maple top on a mahogany body. This one also has a mahogany neck, whereas mine is bird's eye maple. It is a very heavy guitar and reading Lee's post about the pickup being not quite as good as it could be, I remember now that was a problem way back when I played it on gigs. We did have the magnets replaced or re-magnetised, or something, but nothing ever made it as good a sounding instrument as mine. It would be a simple fix, the pickup needs changing for another vintage Supro one, or for a new Jason Lollar one. My pickup was and still is a great one. I used it in a lap steel for fifteen years before it became a donor pickup (not a doner pickup!!!), and it has always had a fantastic sound. Thinking about it, that pickup has been on every album I have ever recorded! Shine On Michael

Rather than have the magnets remagnetised I put 2 similar sized magnets on each side of the pickup, in tandem with the originals. I don’t have another to compare it with ,but it sounds great to me. The magnets hold themselves in place , so no glue or anything needed Pete

Regarding the pickup if you look closely at the images there are some extra magnets flat on the black plate, back when this one was assembled Jason Lollar was not supplying replacement magnets so the fix is out there, I had a bunch of lap steels in the early 2000's when Dave was making these guitars so I must hold my hand up as being culpable for the demise of a few as I would pop over to Dave for one thing or another as entering the luthiers lair is always a treat to see what is in progress at the time. Also when Danalectro got back into making guitars you could buy the lipstick pickups boxed and as ebay was in it,s infancy at the time I got a small job lot, I still have one but that is for my next build where the elements of the King/coodercaster will drop into a offset body, although this has been on the backburner for a while (decades).
