Hi folks, today I played four vintage National Style 1 ukes back to back and they all sound quite different. There are so many more variables with resonator instruments than for instance with a "simple" flat top guitar or uke - as you all know obviously.
Which one do you prefer (sound/looks...)?

Thanks for sharing this experience, we can't dream to get a chance to hear all those kids in the same room; I had to scratch my head wondering if I'm dreaming?...
For my heart Mr 226 got the most beautiful design, with this big star appearing between the screens...very art-deco...with this special neck and head shape, somewhat more gracefull, a bit thiner and longer in apearance...and this very special string retainer, looking just like the crown of the National shield upside down.
I love this sound too, true it wasn't exactly the sweet sound of what someone could wait for a uke, but he's got all the characteristics of a true resophonic instrument, perhaps even enhanced by the large openings, and the white strings too. (It could be interesting to know wich brand and type of strings are used ?). Looks like an ebony saddle ?...do you know if it's the orignal one ? (Sears duolian have ebony too, sometimes )
(very interesting to hear because I'm actualy building a large sieve coverplate for a guitar, it has a huge impact on the sound, I've got a Sears Duolian too, with these large sections of holes, sharing that kind of sound,...perhaps monstruous in some ways, even a bit "gramophonic" but so dynamic and clear, I really dig it).
I had to admit that Mr 400 have a very sweet sound, less audacious but with all what a good uke can give, I bet this one should win the beauty contest.
Its good to know that they are all in your carefull hands, but....you got only two hands; so feel free to tell me if ever you don't want to keep the one who's loosing the contest!

Each one has its own beautiful qualities, but my favourite in your hands is the 1928 #136. Whether my choice would be the same if I was playing them is something I can't answer.
Nice video!
