Hi all, I have had to remove the coverplate on a 2011 NRP style o to get rid of a buzz caused by a redundant piezo wire. One of the machine screws is a bit looser then l would like. Any suggestions for tightening it up a bit? Thanks Chris βI love slide meβ

Thanks PD, thatβs on my list. I seem to remember in the distant past, something about oversized screws. Thanks Chris

Oversized screws will just make the hole bigger. I'd just put a tiny dab of glue on the thread to make it fatter, or even a tiny dab in the hole.
I once used epoxy putty at the back of a hole to make a new thread but it was an aluminium Dobro and there was no thread left at all.

Glue in the thread, or some very fine fuse wire wrapped into the thread. Davey is correct, do not use a bigger screw!

Even a bit of cotton thread will do the trick! πππΈ

Sorry Michael, posting at the same time! Basically anything that will 'fatten'the screw without damaging the guitar.

Thank you all for the sound advice. I was going to go down the oversized screw route, but not now.
Best forum ever! βI love slide meβ

Hi there !
As a wee thing to check before you go down that route, have you checked that your other coverplate screws are also loose in the screw-hole ??
ie. Could the screw itself be worn ??

This is correct. It is worth swapping the screws around. Sometimes one is loose in one hole is not in another. Shine On Michael

Don't get us started on replacement screws Al! I think someone on the forum found a workshop in Outer Mongolia that makes screws that kinda almost nearly match original National coverplate screws. Two year waiting list though! Lol. πππΈ

Hi again, I found screws with exactly the same thread as vintage Nationals (not the post mid-30's self-tapping screws like my 14-fret Duolians have). The dome on my slotted screws is taller than vintage screws and they only do them in plain brass or stainless steel - not nickel-plated steel, but they don't look too bad. I've got the stainless steel ones on my NRP Style 1.5 Tricone AND on my 1932 Style N - that has slots with just one screw facing the fretboard - it's not all that noticable as it's below the strings and where your picking hand normally is.

Back in the vintage Fender Tweed amp days they would put fingernail polish (lacquer) on the screws to keep them from vibrating loose. It makes them tight but not so tight that you can't get them loose.
