Unfortunately, it looks like I am not going to be getting any gigs as a guitarist for the foreseeable future. I seem to have become a bassist. Consequently I can’t justify having so much cash tied up in gear that I am not using. Sadly, that means this fabulous acoustic guitar amp has to go. It is by far the best acoustic amp I have owned and I’ve been through offerings from Marshall, Fishman and Tanglewood. I would probably have saved myself a lot of cash if I had just bitten the bullet and gone for the AER in the first place.
This amp is the latest version of the two channel AER 60 watt combo. AER believe in evolution rather than revolution and they got the concept right from the get go. IMO the main feature it offers over previous versions is the switchable 9 volt phantom power on Channel 1 using stereo jack. Channel 2 still has the switchable 48 volt phantom power on jack/XLR. The 9 volt phantom power means that you can use pickup systems that require external power (Highlander, K&K, etc) without additional battery boxes. Just plug your stereo lead into channel 1 and you are good to go. It works really well with the highlander in my National. Just set the EQ to a frown and you are good to go.
The full spec is here: www.aer-music.de/produkte/produktdetails/compact-604-15979416385f3ea786c3c045f3ea786c3c0f. I got mine from PMT, Norwich. It was a cancelled special order, in that is in brown tolex instead of the standard black and has a stand mount on the base ( looks like mic stand size and requires an adapter to mount it on a standard speaker pole), which I believe is an extra but I might be wrong on that. I think it looks really good in brown. Otherwise it is entirely the same as the standard black version. I am including the AER folding tilt stand (which was an extra) and fits neatly into the front pocket of the padded gig bag, along with the power lead. Condition wise it is immaculate. I can’t see any nicks or scuffs on it, despite being gigged about 10 times. Obviously that padded bag works well.
There are a lot of very positive reviews for these AER amps. They are a bit of an industry standard for acoustic players. Good enough for the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, etc. What a lot of the reviews don’t say, is how good it sounds with a jazz electric. I have played my Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin through it and it sounds fantastic. I would say a really compact little alternative to the Roland Jazz Chorus, if you don’t need the stereo. The built in effects (reverb, delay chorus) are very good but it makes a great platform for effects pedals, either in front, or through the effects loop. It’s really akin to a little portable PA: totally transparent, which is probably why it is so popular with solo singer/songwriters. Volume wise it is enough for pub/coffee house gigs, especially if you put it on a poll. For bigger gigs it makes a great monitor and use the DI to send your mix to the PA. The DI gives you pre and post options, so you can set your own EQ and tell the sound man to put the PA at equality.
The cheapest I can see these online is £839. Mine cost a bit more because of the special finish and I am bundling the tilt stand. I am asking for £620 ono posted, or try and collect in Fakenham, Norfolk. I will meet up for a handover within a reasonable mileage.
