British music giant Chris Barber has died, aged 90Very sad to hear that Chris Barber has died. I met Chris on a couple of occasions in the 1980s and he was great to be around. It is hard to put into words how important Chris Barber has been in the development of music in the UK. This is from UNCUT Magazine....by Sam Richards Trombonist and double bassist Chris Barber, one of the key figures in British jazz, has died aged 90. As well as being at the vanguard of the trad jazz revival, first with Ken Colyer’s Jazzmen and then leading his own bands, Barber played a crucial role in the development of British rock’n’roll. In 1955, he recorded a version of “Rock Island Line” with his banjo player Lonnie Donegan that became the first debut vocal record to be certified gold in the UK, sparking the skiffle boom. He collaborated with Rory Gallagher – on cult 1972 album Drat That Fratle Rat – and later played with the likes of Van Morrison and Jools Holland. RIP >Chris Barber Shine On Michael

Just thinking what a profound effect Chris Barber had on the UK music scene, both electric, via skiffle bands leading to the Beatles et al, & acoustic, the way Broonzy/Terry/McGhee inspired the likes of Davy Graham, Bert Jansch etc - I guess it would have developed in some way anyhow, but we'd certainly have lived in the realm of Doris Day & Perry Como a lot longer - if you want to build statues...

One fantastic show I attended was Chris Barber's Jazz & Blues Band with special guest Rory Gallagher around 30+ years ago at Warwick University ~ I remember looking around the audience and noticing 3/4's had long hair and motorcycle jackets!
Chris's band played the first half of Jazz & Blues standards.....then in the half-time break Rory's Strat was brought onto centre stage & placed on a stand ~ it's appearance blew the roof off!!! 😆
.....a great show!!!
Slide On!
