I’ve been watching quite a few online gigs in the past few weeks and have noticed a trend that most people appear to play guitar left handed, even when I know they don’t. I thought at first it was a Apple/Android thing but my experiments prove it isn’t. The iPhone/iPad camera works quite sensibly in native mode. If you are using the backward facing (selfie) camera you see yourself as if looking in a mirror but your output, be it photo or video, comes out right-way-round. You would expect FB Live to be the same as native mode? WRONG! By default the resulting FBL video is in mirror mode. I can see why, your video is going live straight into the ether and they haven’t got time /processing power to flip it on the fly. So you need to correct it before you start. Step by Step Open Facebook. ‘Click’ Live And you get... Notice I’m in mirror mode (writing behind my head). Set the destination at the top of the screen. I’ve set it to ‘Only me’ because I’m testing and don’t want anyone to know I’m live. If you are really going for it you can set this to everyone, a group or certain people as you wish. Now ‘click’ on the ‘Magic Wand’ and a menu bar appears at the bottom of the screen... ‘click’ on the spanner and screwdriver icon (1) and and then the screen flipping icons appear (2). Here I’ve selected the horizontal flip and now I’m right-way-around (writing behind my head). Put phone how you want it (portrait/landscape) depending on whether you are a harmonica player or guitarist. Flip the icons so you are right way up and not in mirror mode. When you are ready ‘click’ Start Live Video. After 5 seconds or so you are live and recording. When you’ve done ‘click’ Finish. If you want to save a local copy ‘click’ SAVE (1). If you want to post it on your timeline tick in the appropriate places and SHARE. If you are just testing (Only me) DELETE (2). This deletes the Live video not the one you just saved locally. You cannot get out of this screen until you select DELETE or SHARE. That’s all folks Note that, as far as I can tell, the forward facing camera is always the right way round. Cheers

Ken, That is a really good bit of instruction for doing Facebook live broadcasts.
On a good smart phone or tablet, surely it is better to set it up in advance and use the main camera, rather than the selfie one, as the main camera is so much better. On my new-ish iPhone 11 Pro, I have a triple lens camera that takes amazing pictures and videos. So it must be better to set it up in advance and then not be able to see yourself in the screen while doing your live broadcast?
Another interesting area to look into is the audio. If you know what you are doing you can get a really good sound, either by being careful with your source sound, or by using a good external mic. I have a Zoom iQ7 iPhone mic and I am planning on getting a Shure MV88 iPhone mic sometime soon. Both offer extraordinarily good quality recording and turn your iPhone's audio recordings into studio quality. WARNING...you must be in Airplane mode and then connected to wifi or you get all those weird phone noises on your recordings.
I haven't done a live Facebook show yet, but I do intend to do one to see how it goes. If it feels good and folks like it I will start doing a regular one every week. As I have said to a few people that have been asking me to do one, there is no rush as we are in this for a long time.
Your tips and instructions about how to go live without being back to front are excellent!
Thanks

Hi Michael,
Absolutely the best route is to use the forward facing camera. Higher res, always right way round. Even better have someone else in charge of the camera and making sure you look good so you can get on with the performance without worrying.
I’ve got a Røde VideoMicMe directional for the iPhone but it needs specialist apps to use it, native apple camera can’t use it. I use it for load rock gigs, being able to turn down the levels to stop clipping really helps.
Looking forward to your experiments.
Cheers

Now if people would just start setting their camera in landscape mode instead of portrait we'd be all set. Why someone would shoot scenes at the beach or anywhere in portrait mode is beyond me unless their intended audience is just using a phone. When theses videos get posted and you look at them in full screen you have this little image taking up 1/3 of the screen and 2/3 is black. Just something that ticks me off.

I haven't done any FB Live videos, But I have been experimenting with different ways to make videos to post to FB. So far, I've bought and used a Zoom Q2n recorder, A Zoom IQ7 on my I Phone 11 and just the I-Phone 11 alone without a Mic. I've worked exclusively in the Photo and Video field for 40+ years now, but I'm no expert at recording music. My opinion is that the Q2n is the best all around quality wise, but I think the small gain in quality is negated by the convenience factor. You then have to transfer to a computer and edit/compress it and then post it. The I-Phone is definitely the convenient way to shoot and post right away (unless you want to edit). I'll be honest, IMO the Zoom IQ7 is only fractionally better than just using the I-Phone 11's native mic. The tiny difference is probably negated by the convenience factor and more importantly, completely wiped out once FB processes and compresses the video to put it on your page. Michael, I'd love yo hear your thoughts on the IQ7 on the iPhone 11 vs Just the 11 and it's built in mic.

I double posted sorry... But I'll add that I also have a Tascam DR-7 recorder and it's hands down the best audio, but no video. With the IQ7, you download an app for your phone that turns it into an impressive looking audio recorder, with lotsa settings, EQ and effects that work great when recording audio from the app. But it gives no indication that these setting are applied when you are using the video camera with the mic plugged into the Lightning port. In all my A to B comparisons, I just don't hear much difference with and without the mic. I want to think it makes a huge difference, since I sunk $100 into it, but I just don't hear it...

Hi Gaucho,
I find the iQ7 to be a very good mic. To my ears it is absolutely better than the built in Apple mic, which is also a good mic. I have had mine for five years and I have recorded numerous rehearsals and performances with it. The iQ7 turned my previous iPhone 6 and now my iPhone 11 Pro into high quality digital audio recorders. It is so convenient too.
I am just about to upgrade to the Shure MV88 because from all I have read it is a better mic. For a start it records 24 bit 48khz wav, whereas the Zoom only records at 16 bit. For a while I had been considering the Rode iXY iPhone mic, but the Shure is getting all the best reviews now. Having said all that, the Zoom is a fantastic mic, as are all Zoom products. They really pack a lot into their stuff.
I have had a Zoom H4 for 11 years. I have recorded with it hundreds of times and it still works perfectly. It is a fantastic piece of kit. Back in 2009 I recorded a whole tour on it and in 2011 I recorded a friend of mine's album on the H4. I used a couple of good mics and got voice, guitar, Dobro, upright bass, and even backing vocals and percussion on a few tracks. I mixed it in Logic and had it mastered by one of London's top analogue mastering engineers, and the album sounds great. It wasn't for general release, just for posterity.
Recording is much like photography, which I know you are highly skilled and experienced at, are so often not about the tools, they are about the skill of the person using the tools.

I have the MV88, very user friendly and sounds good, though I’m not particularly tech minded and could be doing a better job on the set up I’m sure. It’s a really nice little mic I think.
Instagram is also good choice for live videos and, I find, an excellent spot for happening across talented new musicians!

OK had a play today. My instructions mostly hold up but with a few caveats... Note: These instructions are for iPhone. I don’t have a android If you want to record in Landscape don’t un-mirror in landscape orientation. If you do the video will come out sideways no matter how you orient your phone, tablet or laptop. Hold it in portrait, flip in to right way round as described and then turn the phone to Landscape and then start the recording. You will note that when you turn it sideways it remembers you have flipped it. BTW if you turn the phone upside down (I was trying to improve the Rode VideoMicMe location) it records upside down!!! Proof if proof were needed... 1drv.ms/v/s!AsU4mKZ5umq43Riaz9QOdR9iadXH?e=rnPGnk sigh, the whole link will work but safari chops it up Those who know me won’t expect too much from my playing, sigh Keep safe Cheers

Only managed to download a picture of a neatly coiffeured and serious looking Ken I presume but with no music attached - pity.
Happy days

The video can be viewed but is probably effort than it worth
If in Proboards click on the post and select More, Web View and it opens in a browser, highlight the link and Copy it then paste it into safari
If on a laptop (win 10) highlight and copy the link and paste it into a browser

Had a little time to experiment today in my continuing quest for low budget equipment. I found a broken pair of earbuds in a parking lot that had a mic. Took the lightning adapter for the iphone 7 plus, a Y splitter and a little tape. I first tried sticking it to the back plate of my 1133 but didn't get the sound I was expecting. I then tried sticking it to the wood block in the front. Still not the volume I'd like but I posted the video anyway. Funny how it picks up the motor bikes going by. I'm not looking for major hits so I don't really bother with catchy titles. I think all of my future experiments will have the same title. Attachments:
