This should be an easy one for the experienced on here. I have an M-Audio "NRV10" mixer which is also a Firewire interface, I'm only using it as an audio mixer though. It can send ten channels both ways over Firewire, but that's another thing altogether. My question concerns the audio outputs: I have left and right "Control Room" outputs and left and right "Main Mix" outputs. The manual tells me to connect powered loudspeakers to the Control Room outputs. All well and good.
I had a fraught time again this afternoon with no audio to be heard. I experience this from time to time, but not so frequently if I don't use the Firewire. The problem was too low volume on the powered loudspeakers ... It's not something one likes to admit amongst such learned company!
Anyway- as part of the extended head scratching, I gave up and referred to the manual's block diagram. It seems that all the outputs are available through both XLR and TRS with left and right sockets for each output. I have been using TS plugs going to the powered loudspeakers. The TRS sockets are configured internally so that audio can be passed with a separate connection to the output level meters. My question is concerning the use of TS plugs in the TRS sockets- is it unwise or even bad for the mixer? The level meters still work fine. I've had it for about ten years now with no problem to date, but I do know that ordinarily if I put a TS audio plug into a TRS socket it shorts out one of the stereo channels because of the longer "sleeve". That is to say putting a TS plug in the TRS headphone socket on a Walkman does not pipe mono to both ears, hence my concern and question. Any sage opinion gratefully soaked up!
