Joaquin Murphey was the lap steel player for Spade Cooley,The plainsmen and Tex Williams Western Caravan mostly in the 1940s. Even if you don't care for Western Swing music. It is hard to not marvel at how good he was. His single string Jazz lines are in a league of there own. Give this a listen.

I have always loved Joaquin's playing and as with so many early steel players I can hear Sol Hoopii's influence shining through. Joaquin's playing influenced many of the next generation, including Buddy Emmons and Speedy West. I think he probably led the way for Leon McAuliffe too. So he certainly left his mark on Planet Earth before moving on. I used to listen to a lot of Western Swing, back in the early 80s I was buying everything and anything that could find in that genre.
Lovely! Thanks for posting.

The steel playing is a joy, what was more surprising is the violinist, it is rare to hear anyone get near to Stephan Gippelli. A stellar band. Pete

Got a Spade Cooley Essential Recordings double CD for £4.99 on the Primo label. The last few instrumental tracks, including Oklahoma Stomp, on CD are terrific.
Instrumentation includes a harp (orchestral variety)in a big western swing band
Cheers
