Hi all, just wondering if any of you have experience with ally bronze slides (solid) and if so what are they like compared to the usual bronze variants (standard bronze, brass, phosphor bronze), and german/nickel silver and steel?
Best to y’all and yours Lew

Hi Lew, There's only one way to find out Enjoy! Shine On Michael Well, I bought a couple...one short and fat and one a little more “athletic” looking and they sound really rather good. I bought them from Ben’s Bars over in Wales. The finish is something else and sound wise they’re comparable with my gorgeous and prized German Silver Daddyslide. A bit more grit on the bass but a little less on the treble when I A/B’d them on a wood bodied reso 12 fretter (dimensions the same on both slides)...not as dark as phosphor bronze, mellower than stainless steel, not quite as compressed and ‘modern’ as german silver. Anyhoo, hope that’s useful to some of you. They’re worth a try I reckon :-) I also bought two 316 stainless steel slides from the guy. Fan-bloody-marvo too!! Best Lew

That sounds interesting to me at least, I have a bronze slide from Daddyslide and I have some nickel concerns so I can't use German Silver. Don't know where I'd find a maker in US though.

Certainly Jon - you have to send him a message about regular slides as the website only advertises bullets/ steels. :-) Hope I’m not breaking any rules about advertising though 🤔 Sorry in advance if I am and don’t hesitate to delete my post, Michael. www.bensbars.co.uk/

Lawd lawdy, Harriet Maybe they’d post overseas...? It can’t hurt to ask :-) A Phosphor Bronze and Special Bronze Daddyslide are on my wish list! One must have the set...nickel allergy depending. Cheers Harriet 😃 Lew

Lew, this old git is confused - as usual.
Did he make you tubular slides (a la bottleneck) or solid bar slides?

I am a bit confused too because aluminium is a soft material with almost no resonance and bronze is, generally speaking, not a good material for slides as it is somehow not very musical, if that makes sense. I have a couple in my collection that were made for me many years ago, one is a Hawaiian bullet "steel" and the other a bottleneck type of slide and while they were perfectly engineered, they are just not great tools.

So much focus on the peripherals— it’s the archer not he arrows.

So much focus on the peripherals— it’s the archer not he arrows. Precisely--just get a glass or brass slide, whatever your preference, and learn to play a good vibrato.

Just get one slide Graeme? Where's the fun in that?
Best wishes to you all, John

Because the time spent mucking about with different slides is time that could be spent acquiring some technique which will lead to 'fun'. It's a seductive illusion that there is the perfect guitar/slide/amp/car/woman/man etc. out there that will give you the eureka moment but there isn't. EDIT: I'll soften that somewhat harsh dictum with IMHO.
