www.swanage-blues.org/2008Artists1.htmI went last September, thoroughly recommend it. It's almost all free gigs, so when they passes the 'at, remember to put some in that truly reflects the value of the event.

Still pushing this one, it's a belter of an event. Town centre licensed accommodation is all becoming booked up now, I'm OK, me and my brother are in at the Purcbeck, so we'll not have far to go to find our pits at the end of the night. And If you want to see how much of a pounding a National will take, come along and see John Crampton, unbelievable.

Surprised you haven't got a stall selling the resos, even if you aren't playing. Captive audience, enthusiastic, some even got money. (My heart belongs to a wood bodied Ozark tricone, so I am personally immune to your blandishments.)

Well, I looked at your gigs list, fancy sticking your nose around the door if you have the time, talking to Steve Darrington? Nice place to be. The Purbeck's got a room spare too due to someone's ill health if you want somewhere close to the heart of things (the town's actually small enough to shout from one side to the other, but you know what I mean).

Hi Max,
Actually on my day off the last place I would go is a blues festival!!!!! We did speak with Steve last year, but their budget is quite small and Swanage is not down the road. It's great town, I used to go there when I was a child.

OK, first stumbled across Swanage Festival last year on the internerd, having time to browse as I'm currently off work as the result of a magnificently broken leg.
The atmosphere is lovely and laid back compared to a folkie bash I went to before the Oct event and the egos, surprised the doors were wide enough for some of the heads. Even had one singer state he was "going to do a Blind Boy Fuller song properly, not the way he did it".
For contrast the Swanage open mic was what one should be, you get up and do your thing and nobody expects pro quality, you get genuine warmth from the crowd (and it was a crowd, can't answer for how many will be outside in this weekend's weather (I sin der forcast mister)). People take the time to talk to each other, the bands we got to see ranged from good to "I'll never do that, I'm giving up".
Whilst I admit some of the rosy glow was courtesy of the infinite benefice of Weston's Cider and the chance to spend time with my little brother (HA! You seen his waistline?), it was a genuine cosy, intimate event. I camped up in my van in the car park round the back of a building. Can't tell you which one as it might not be permitted under the terms of the licence.. ..oops, nearly let it slip. This time we're in the Purbeck though.
Accomodation ranges from £14 a night at the bunkhouse to £60 Festival Special at the Grand. Apart from the Studland and Corfe Castle gigs everything is in easy shambling distance of anywhere in the town.
And if Chickenbone reads this, Clive's probably not going to be at the Tower Of Song tonight, I'm picking him up tomorrow morning so he needs his beauty sleep; but then, you know that already.
