Caught Wizz Jones and Pete Berryman's gig in Corris last night. Amazing on many fronts: the playing (Wizz has just got so much energy - must have fingers of steel Pete played some beautiful Celtic tunes in DADGAD, DADFAD); the venue - a tiny village hall lit with candles: the local pub - straight out of "The League of Gentlemen" (good to see the continuing tradition of the acts having a drink with the punters before the gig. We all ran through the rain back to the village hall - pint glasses in hand); and of course Corris itself. There are three points on the globe that make up the sacred hippy triangle of life. Marrakesh, Khathmandu and er.... Corris Robn

Robn Wizz plays down in Cornwall most years and always puts on a good show, Pete Lives down here, and whilst I haven't seem him play slide, he is a musician of supreme quality, not many of us will end up with John Renborne stating ""Pete is one of the unsung heroes of the British acoustic guitar movement." about us. Its always a pleasure, after 30 years of playing I have met up with Pete and am now fortunate enough to take regular lessons from him. Its still a shock to find out how much I hadn't learnt in those thirty years. Next weekend he is playing guitar in various locations around Truro for the switching on of the Xmas lights, I shall watch with pleasure and a degree of envy in between nipping in for a few pints of xmas cheer.

Hi Tommo, Pete did a couple of Cornish tunes in his set. I was facinated by the colour he achieved using alt tunings. I really enjoy that Celtic flavour. He sang a couple of verses to songs in old Cornish but said he wasn't prepared to sing any more than that in front of a Welsh speaking audience who would know when he'd got it wrong Great guy. Wizz opened with Big Bill Broonzy and Mississippi John Hurt numbers - excellent ! Robn

I had the pleasure of being MC for Wizz's gig at the Topic Folk Club in Bradford last year and I've met him a couple of other times at (and after) gigs. The guy's a total legend. His right hand in particular is fantastic: the volume and power he gets out of that old Epiphone is just amazing. If you search on YouTube you'll find some clips, including a priceless B&W one from a BBC documentary made in the early 60s. I've never seen him play slide but the way he can bend a string it often sounds as if he is! Oh, and he's a pretty fierce clawhammer banjo-picker too! (am I allowed to use the 'B' word here?!) Cheerily, Gerry C Edit: Just found Wizz's own YouTube site at www.youtube.com/user/wizzjones Enjoy!

Hi Gerry, Wizz certainly generates great range from his right hand. There were lots of string snaps against the fingerboard and he would set a strong rhythm by bringing the heal of his right hand and forearm down against the guitar without missing a picking pattern That old Epi was certainly bruised by the experience Great skill and great musicality. I'd love to see him perform again sometime - it was an absolute pleasure. Robn PS He played clawhammer banjo on Saturday night. My mate Roger was droolin' (I hope that the "B" word is OK here - In fact, check out "Tin Can Alley")

Pretty normal for a banjo player, though??! ;D

Wizz Jones is a great musician. I did a festival in Italy a couple of years ago with Wizz & his son, Simeon. They played a great set together. Long may he continue to tour & record!
