Haven't had GAS for a while (due to BAS) and thinking of getting a Weissenborn. Any recommendations/tips/WHY? Must be under £500. Would want to try first so ideally located within 100 mile radius of West Herts.
Cheers
Graeme. (yes I know I'm ignoring my own signature)!

Grahame, if you direct message Washboard Chris on this forum he may have something, he has been through a few in his search for a weissenborn/lap steels, you can never have too many guitars but they have to be exchanged every once and a while.

I too harbour a not so secret desire for one a "Weissenborn". The Anderwoods look decent enough, but on their "about us" web page, I read a number very carefully selected scenario creating statements. It is down to the individual as to how he or she interprets such obfuscation. Hey that's unfair and part of me withdraws that comment, but far from seeing some lovely handiwork emmanating from Hardy country, I smell Chinese product. I have no issue with that at all, but other notable importers make no such attempt to allow a prospective purchaser to believe that they're investing in the skills of a Home Counties craftsman. I would add that I think I'd be very happy with one of these Anderwoods- the £500-ish one with a bit of glossy going on, but I have to let some others go first and that's the tallest hurdle. Am I the only one that clicked on Jonno's link and first thought "That's ticking both the affordable and nice looking boxes, I wonder what they play and sound like?"

Sub £500 and you will struggle to find a Weissenborn that is not from the Far East, I have one a laminated teardrop which has a half decent fishman which roars when plugged in, the nut needed re spacing as often the builders do not understand what they are building and build everything to Telecaster specs, Other than that my musical Wardrobe as I call it is a fantastic, cheap fun instrument that lives on a stand and takes everything the house throws at it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I liked the look and price of the Anderton range, particularly this one: LINK and the fact there is reasonable quality demos of each instrument. They plainly have to be from the Far East at that price but that's where MM's come from. If they have half as good quality control as Michael then I can't go far wrong.

Laminated back and sides? I'd go the extra furlong for the all-solid for the sake of the difference being asked for in those prices, but query the definition of "Solid" first. I know that just being made from solid timber isn't a guarantee of satisfaction, but it's a rule of thumb. For example- I'd be willing to bet that a maker such as (eg) Bob Taylor would make a better guitar using laminated back and sides than a Chinese workshop using all solid timbers, but at this price point it's a good starting point.
Then you start to fret about humidity (or lack of it!)

Alternatively keep saving, sell a few other musical lodgers and send a Postal order overseas.... www.burginguitars.co.nz/

This guitar was made in China (they do some that are UK made £2000 and up. comes with a nice hard case abnd I will throw in a Steel. I have now got 4 of these instruments so will sell at the bargain price of £350 + P&P. PM me if you want pics
