Had a micro-debate last weekend on the right way to put one of these on. What would you do, and why? TT

I've only got one and it's long enough to play with rim to palm. The one I made the old fashioned way in North Carolina with string, petrol and fire having shifted the bottle of wine first. This is the only one I've done and it worked first time. I will not make another - only so I can claim a 100% success rate. That allows me to flick off with the tip causing less noise on other strings than the other way round. However, I do have a couple of Mr. McWees de-rimmed jobs - the Mateus Rose one being particularly sweet.... I'll get my coat......

Congratulations PD on making a slide the old way.I used to work in glass but still ended up with the floor covered in shards after many failed attempts. I've never tried a slide with the rim still on but suspect I'd find it pretty awkward though it does look more authentic I have to say.
'Now I'm not one for taking sides, but when it comes to making slides, homemade doesn't work for me, I'll go with Mateus McWee'

I voted for the way I do it, but is there such a way as the "right" way?

Odd as it sounds, I would go rim near fingertip. I'm sure I saw Sonny Black do the same, and others. I think... TT

as a side to this ,,does anyone change the finger they put the slide on depending on the song? i usually use my pinkie but trying some Son House today i had to use ring finger so my pinkie could be utilised stretching for a chord

If'n I want to play clean and precise, it's ring finger because damping is more efficient. If I want to make best use of all my fingers, I go for my little ("pinky"- ugh) finger. Over time I find myself going for ring finger for which I have MM to thank. It took a while for me to admit that he had a valid point.

Hi there !
More to the point, if you have a tapered slide, do you have the wide end beyond the end of your finger, or the narrow end.
I know some guys who wear a slide with the narrow end at the end of their finger - and it just looks wrong to me !
Plus, you have to bend your hand round further around the neck to get the slide to lie flat against the strings, than if you let the taper of the slide taper outwards, towards the strings.

¡Hola!
There is no right way, you have to work out what suits you best :-)
Personally I’m a little-finger man, it allows me to play chords and slide and also because all my resos are 12 frets to the body I know when my hand hits the body I’m at the 12th.
I’d always place the rim at the bottom of my finger, I want the smooth glass at the tip so I can hit the notes I want (sometimes!). Also what Snakehips said re taper.
Sonny Black does use his the other way up but he tends to cover all the strings all the time. It works for him but that brings us full circle to my 1st paragraph. If we all played exactly the same way it would get awful boring. We can discuss this at Pocklington :-)
Anyway, back to the pool.
cheers from sunny Spain

Interesting thread this for newcomer to the site. My issue is improving the friction between my finger and the inside of the slide depending which finger and size and weight of the slide I use to try to prevent clatter on the frets and the slide flying off in moments of passionate play!!. I swap between ring finger and "pinky" but prefer pinky for as a finger style player it seems to give more freedom for chording and riffs.
I've tried various linings but have settled on a finger bandage with a little sticking plaster over it. This seems to cling to the slide wall and the bandage adds comfort and absorbs any finger sweat.
As a newby I expect I'll be told to man up, go fully "au naturelle" and resist such abominations!

As a newby I expect I'll be told to man up, go fully "au naturelle" and resist such abominations! Exactly that! You read my mind :-) I like my slide not to be tight. I like to be able to move it around on my finger and for my finger not to be straight. We all have our own ways of doing these things. The main thing is to just keep doing it. The more you play, the better you get and the easier and more natural it all becomes. Shine On Michael

I prefer it loose too. A good liner is "loop" "Velcro". The self adhesive variety. You'll need to get the knack of unrolling it inside the slide as you simultaneously pull off the backing. Good fun. Like MM says- my vote goes for riding bare-back!
