Last night before Doug Macloud started the vwnue played a film with old blues footage, sone house,Fred Mcdowell etc... now the it i am interested in is footage of a blind man playing 12 string acoustic. it is in black and white , the gentleman concerned is black, suited and booted, dark shades and sitting at a table outside . there are 3 other people around him one has a ukulele who later joins in and another has a guitar. i know its sketchy but does anyone recognise it?

Hi Jon
That sounds like it could be Reverend Gary Davis.

Hi Jon
I thought from your description that it had to be Reverend Gary Davis. Well if I had thought a little more I would have come up with this film from the Pete Seeger TV show. Pete is the one that plays the banjo. On the bench, that is Donovan and Shawn Phillips. Shawn is the one at the back gawping at the Rev. I think Gary Davis would have made any of us gawp. I know of some wonderful stories about the Rev. from friends that were close to him, especially Roy Bookbinder and the late Robert Tilling.
If you are interested in Reverend Gary Davis, Robert's book "Oh What A Beautiful City" is a delightful celebration of an incredible musician, and from what I have heard, an incredible man too.
Reverend Gary Davis was a very important and influential musician.
What threw me about your description were two points...it was filmed outside and someone was playing a ukulele. If you had said it was a guy playing a banjo and they were seated around a table in a TV studio, I would have gone straight to it.
This is from the Pete Seeger show too - Mississippi John Hurt....

I just bought Ernie Hawkins 4 x DVD(!) tuition box set on Rev. Gary Davis’ Gospel Blues material...jaw dropping! Should last me a lifetime trying to learn just some of it!!
I only own his album Harlem Street Singer but recommend it wholeheartedly. He was quite something :-)
Best,
Lew

Here’s another video worth checking out of Davis... Death Don’t Have No Mercy (from the Harlem Street Singer LP). Gut wrenching and beautiful.

'From Blues to Gospel' on Biograph is the definitive Rev.Gary Davis album IMHO. Here's a chance to snap it up if you're quick. LINK

If its Gary Davis, I'd believe Stephan Grossman would be the easiest resource for films etc. www.guitarvideos.com/products/vestapol-dvds/rev-gary-davis-the-video-collectionI did a bit of searching as this sounded like stuff I've seen and vaguely recall being part of Smithsonian Folkways, Peete Seeger, Ralph Rinzler et Al's efforts to document folk music in murca. I'm a bit rushed and can't stream video to this device... The irony of searching blindly for video of a blind musician. oy! Smithsonian and the US Library of congress are the #1 source for a lot of great older footage. LOC is where a lot of Vestapol content comes from.

Nice one Jono. I thinks there’s well over 4 hours of lesson time and a whole load of live footage of the man including all the above (excluding the MJH one). Enjoy!

Yep, the above video and in-depth tuition of how to play it :-)
‘Children Of Zion’ and ‘Goin’ To Sit Down On The Banks’ are very good too...so much interesting stuff going on in these pieces.
