I have a 12 fret Blues and highly recommend it after about 6 months use. It's set up for lap play with heavy gauge Newtones. I've been playing mostly open G (DGDGBD). Is it safe to tune to open A and Open E on this guitar with this setup? If it's not safe, what capo would you recommend?

Hi nedbeatysquealed, I am pleased to hear that you are enjoying your guitar. I would not tune #07289 up to open A and E with Newtone heavy gauge strings, but with a set of Newtone light gauge (15 to 56) it will be absolutely fine. I am more worried about the cone than the neck. Too much pressure could damage it. The neck is okay because you play it lap style with a high nut. Re; capo for it - I don't remember how high your strings are, but if they are a quarter of an inch (5mm) or higher above the fretboard, you won't find a better capo than Charlie's Slide Pro capo. It's not the cheapest capo around, but it is the best. www.charliescapo.com/product/charlies-slide-pro-capo/The Scheerhorn capo is good, but it's not that much cheaper than Charlie's. www.thepickshoppe.com/store/quality-products/scheerhorn-dobro-capoThere are other floating square neck capos, I have seen a few on eBay that look okay for the price. I hope that's helpful. Shine On Michael

With 16/56 you can always play opens G /G6 / G11th /and Bm7 as I do (lap steel) which cover many many styles... and yes D, I do not use it a lot.

In looking at the Nutone page they classify 13-56 as light and 15-56 as the medium gauge. Just to clarify the 15-56 would be OK with Open A and E?
BTW, I got the Charlie's Capo...It's awesome and very easy to use!

It is a little confusing. When we started MM Newtone Strings 26 years ago there were only two gauges available - 15/56 'light gauge' and 16/59 'heavy gauge'. However, due to popular demand a 13/56 set came along about ten years ago and I still find myself calling 15/56s light gauge!
15/56s on a raised action guitar tuned to open E and A should be absolutely fine. As I said in a previous post, your guitar has a raised nut and is only played as a lap steel, so if it does pull the neck a little it doesn't matter. Enjoy your guitar and within reason make it do want you want it to do.
Charlie's capo - Excellent!

Hi Michael
The very question i wanted to ask or almost. I like open E and was wondering if i could still use it although it doesnt matter that much as can drop down to D. I'm going to do that til the new guitar settles in anyway. If i use lights will it be ok to use it? Mine will be played normally not lapstyle. Preference is a strange thing. Take G. I love open G but can't get on with A at all.....
Cheers

Hi johncodger,
Your guitar has been fitted with 13/56 phosphor bronze strings. My advice is to let it settle down with these strings and to tune it DADF#AD / DGDGBD /EADGBE. For E tuning (EBEG#BE), if you want your guitar in that tuning, once it has all settled down and the cone bedded in, maybe you should try a set of 12/54s. Meanwhile a capo and DADF#AD should do it.

Thank's Michael,
I taught myself to play slide on an old fender cd60 that has pretty high action and used that tuning for obvious reasons. Thank's for your advice on alternate tunings and I assure you it's been taken on board as I want the best for my mmb as I do all my guitars (apart from that cd-60 that is ha ha)
Cheers
