Hello all,
I got myself a new droid smart phone and have been downloading a few musically related apps ( fretboard, scales, circle of fifths and a tuner ). I've been hesitant to use a smartphone as a tuner as the mic is not exactly hi fi.
I'm pleasantly surprised with the Boss Tuner app from waza craft. The interface looks exactly like a Boss TU 3 and the results match up with the real deal.
thoughts ? Other fun App suggestions? A good metronome with multiple time sigs ?
Many Thx, all best,
Jeff

Hi Jeff
Cleartune Chromatic Tuner by Bitcount Ltd is the best tuner around. I have it on my iPhone, but I guess it's fine on Android phones. I know lots of musicians that use this app.
Bitcount also do a great metronome called Clockwork.
And if you're into Indian music, check out iTabla Pro. It's not cheap, but it is an amazing app. I use it a lot for practice and many Indian classical musicians use them on stage.

Most people (at gigs) these days use small clip-on tuners ('Snark' usually). For home use then an 'app' seems to me fine. BUT balancing a glass screened phone on my knee while other people tune up around me sounds like a recipe for disaster! PT 20 years ago I got a Boss floor tuner, still works fine (but you need to plug your guitar in to it )

Acoustically I occasionally use a clip-on but I think they look plug ugly sticking up on the headstock. Most times I use good old fashioned pitch pipes. These allow you to get a drone going (if you've got the breath) so tuning to Spanish / Vestapol is easier IMHO. Electrically a good old Boss TU-2 run off the mains does the trick.

Pete is right. I use the iPhone tuner in quiet situations and always when recording because it is so accurate. I have a box of Snark tuners that I use at gigs, they're brilliant for acoustic and electric guitars. PD is right that they are not the most beautiful accessory to leave on while playing.

Went to purchase it but can’t remember my bleeding apple password. So many passwords so little memory! I’ll look for the box with all that important stuff in the morning.
In terms of clip on tuners I have a few secondhand Snarks and all but one have been brilliant. Intelitouch (sp?) and a fender one I have are also pretty decent. Those fancy Polytune ones are supposed to be great. £60 though...bit excessive perhaps!

One thing that a Boss TU2 can do is let you play in stereo with a mono guitar. It has 2outputs , 1 muted 1 unmuted when tuning, these can go to 2 amps, or an amp and a PA. I have not done any tests with big independent amps, so there maybe ground loop problems to overcome but a useful feature. Pete
This idea might even deserve its own thread. I do have a stereo guitar and had an enormous stereo rig many years ago. Age and a realisation that I was doing this for my own amusement and an audience didn’t really care about such subtle tones made me rethink and I have used a single small amp for the last 30 years. Until recently I have not thought about going stereo again. The TU2 might well be a much easier way (I don’t have to rewire my guitar or take my 345 to the pub), we shall see if the covid restrictions let me play out before I am too old to lift my guitar.
