Hi
I was trawling around on youtube earlier, checking out the Sly and The Family Stone footage, when I came across an old TV interview with Sly (below). Around 40 seconds in there is some footage of the man funking around on an acoustic, out of focus, at the bottom of a stair well - shortly after he comes up the stairs carrying what turns out to be a shiny metal spider-bridge reso (Dobro?). Anyway, this, on the face of it, unlikely combination good things led me to wonder if he recorded with such an instrument at all, but have been unable to find out - anyone know?
Cheers

Just found this on Youtube while having that morning cuppa and putting off work that bit longer... - it features a bunch of talented people, including Buddy Emmons and a young Jerry Douglas - thought others might enjoy it, too:

Nice one! Thanks for sharing.
As it happens I'm working on learning Levee Camp Blues myself at present, with the aid of a TV recording of Seasick Steve's playing it on the Folk America gig at the Barbican (some fairly close up shots of his hands, very helpful for those of us just starting to learn to learn from recordings rather than relying on tabs). I haven't really got any further than cycling through variations on the main lick at the moment (but even just that much is great fun, in a mildly trance-inducing sort of a way). So your rendition gives me something more to think about
Cheers

I spoke to the Leeds Irish Centre this afternoon to ask about times (doors open at 8pm, they also said it is definitely the 29th but had originally been the 30th ), but was also advised that phoning nearer the day as tickets have been slow to move and it is possible that the event might be pulled if things don't pick up I'll be trying to make sure that members of the local (Lancaster) blues scene are aware of of the gig, perhaps others in striking distance of Leeds might do likewise ... be a real downer if this gets called off lack of interest? Surely not...

Hi Update on the venue for the Leeds gig on 29th Sept: I have heard back from the Brudenell Social Club who say quite clearly that they are NOT hosting the event (despite what it says on the official D"H"B site) and that the place to go for D"H"B that day is definitely the Leeds Irish Centre www.liveinleeds.com/irish.htm(I also emailed D"H"B's site - didn't get a reply, but the site has been altered - unfortunately it now names both the right and the wrong venues and the link still goes to the wrong club! Must be some confusion... I'll email once more and see if that helps) Anyone else planning to catch him in Leeds ?

Exceptional! Must've played it half a dozen times already, goes lovely with the morning cuppa but has set back my planned early start on the dull stuff.... Not least cos it led me to go looking to see if Manx and Leisz had recorded anything together, couldn't find anything, but did find out that Manx will be visiting the UK to do some interesting slide performances in the near future, 5 venues during the last week of November ( www.harrymanx.com/main.html, for details) Maybe worth mentioning, in case any of you don't know already, a fair bit of Manx' stuff blends blues with Indian style sounds and instruments - took me a while to appreciate this mix, but I'm starting to - you can see him playing the Mohan Veena (a sort of 20 string archtop) on 'Death Have Mercy' along with Kevin Breit on a Tele Really enjoyed his version of 'Can't be Satisfied' too - including the substitution of 'pickle' for 'pistol' ;D (or is that just my ears playing up again?) ( is fun, too but not such a good recording - also, seem to remember a recent-ish post about a guitar like the one Breit is playing on this...) Oh well, I s'pose I'll really have to force myself out of work-avoidance mode now... Cheers

Exciting news, thanks for the heads up, Gerry - I hadn't heard.
Slightly puzzled, though, by the details of the Leeds gig. D"H"E's site says it's the Brudenell Social Club 29th Sept., and provides a link but when you get there there is no mention of the man, plus another act appears to be booked for that night. A more general websearch turns up more references to the Brudenell, but also ads for Leeds Irish Centre for the same night. Tried phoning Brudenell earlier but no-one seemed to know!
I've emailed the relevant parties and will post any clarifications I am lucky enough to get in due course... but if anyone here knows the answer to the riddle, I'd be glad to hear it...Don't want to miss this one....

Hi - another beginner's question: I'm slowly accumulating bits and pieces needed for having a go at building an electric lap steel. It'll be my first go at any such thing and I am aiming to do this for as little outlay as I can. According to an online recipe for a basic first project buildyourguitar.com/resources/lapsteel/index.htm I'm going to need a hardwood plank of 32 x 4 x 1 9/16 inches. Now, I've recently gained a decent enough looking piece of hardwood out of a local skip, but while the lump of wood in question is long and wide enough to afford several pieces of these dimensions it is only around half the recommended depth - so I'm wondering whether I can get away with using glue and doweling two sections together to make a slab of the required depth or whether this would just be a really bad move. Any thoughts or relevant experience anyone? Cheers, Dave

Great videos Michael, Steverino - I think you two might be at cross purposes here: the very first thing you hear blaring out when you watch these recordings on Youtube surely ain't 'Locomotive Skin', at least not as I'm used to hearing it, that cuts in once the 'Custom Guitar Video Blog' credits have passed. Well, Mel, the new recordings are certainly enough are certainly enough to let me see (hear) why you love your Cannon. That is a lot of sound for a little guitar - and some nice noises you're making with it too Cheers Dave

Hi Gouranga - I can't give you any input as I don't have a Cannon, but like you I get tempted (I hear nothing but good about these, and those who have them seem to love them) and have a question, so I hope you don't mind my inquiry piggy-backing on yours...
Could someone tell me the dimensions of the Cannon, especially the scale length but also the body size? (I have looked on the Busker site, but if the info is there I'm missing it)
Ta
