This is one of the 2 used Mule guitars, recently for sale (and mentioned in Tin Can Alley). Both were owned by Charlie Hicks, and this is him playing the tricone. It has a single cone body, but has 3 cones. Charlie Parr, who also has one, said National had a similar prototype in the 30s, but it was never produced. I love the sound Hicks makes, very emotive.
The other was a brass bodied single cone, which also sounds great. Why on earth would he want to sell both!!
But it's too late to buy them now - they've both been sold.

I would check the mules for damage. Hicks told me that he had thrown one on the ground in a temper. I couldn't tell if he was joking - he was a rather humourless chap with me. TT

The prototype that Charlie Parr is talking about, as far as anyone knows, never existed. The guitar he is talking about is an artist's impression in an early National catalogue of what is essentially a 1928 wood-bodied National Triolian with three resonators under a small coverplate. The picture in the catalogue has created so much speculation and many discussions about what this guitar (if it ever existed) might have sounded like, that Mike Lewis "Fine Resophonic Guitars" made what can only be described as an "exact replica of a guitar that might have existed" just to see what, if it had existed, it would have sounded like. The guitar that Mike built to put all this to the test is absolutely stunning and is an exact replica of a guitar that may well never existed. This is the replica 1928 Tricone Triolian that Mike built.... As far as Mike Lewis is concerned, he says that because of the F holes, rather than large grilles like a proper Tricone has, the sound is trapped inside and is somewhat boxy. It is also a very tight fit to get it all fitted properly inside. Shine On Michael

I sent a message to the company as I was keen to see a mule in the flesh, but they sold or were no longer available before anything came back. on the video clips with Charlie hicks they do sound fantastic, I understand Charlie Hicks is in pursuit of electrickery !!!
Fate has intervened however and I picked up another guitar at the London Guitar show which will keep the addiction going for a little longer.

I haven't seen much mention of Mules on this forum. I believe James' Home of Tone has so far brought fewer than a dozen into the UK, but has anyone played one?

TT These two were most certainly in really well kept condition, having played them countless times myself. It was his very first one, an early #42 which bared the brunt of a temper. Amazingly though it still lives on and is one of two he's keeping.

Awesome news about your new guitar though, congrats!
