Hi Mitchfit, I've run high end hifi for more years than I care to remember so I know how involving equipment can become! No offence intended! Best wishes to you all, John

IMO, the equipment technology behind the musician is 49% of the equation...whether it be rosewood, spruce, spun aluminum cones, alnico magnets, and for Jimi, germanium transistors...

John, I know what you are saying, but you are wrong. I have been a professional musician for nearly four decades and I can assure you that is not about the music, it is about the equipment....the bulbs!
This little film is proof.....

Very few are gifted enough to make beautiful music without the equipment and technological innovations, except for a gifted few (as George Harrison recognized in Crackerbox Palace):

As I was taught at college: bulbs grow in the ground, they are lamps.

Thanks for posting the film Michael, terrific! I remember the old boy with the gramophone walking down Oxford street. Spent some time in the booths at HMV. But the highlight has to be the search for the 'sweet spot' fabulous! C'mon own up we've all done it. And who could survive without a stereo sampler album! Good fun! Best wishes to you all, John

Many of us, Blissfully unaware, have been listening to sound made possible by bulbs... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_soundI'm no longer sure what this thread is about, but it sure has been fun ! J

I remember listening to the BBC Light Programme on a valve radio.

The thread actually covered both sides of the Electronic amplifier saga...from the tonal coloration and distortion so desirable in guitar amps, to the authentic, clean, uncolored reproduction so desired in audiophile equipnent. The bulb does it all...

Ian, I know many studio engineers that smoke pipes. They just don't use the same tobacco.
