After buying a CBG a few years ago and found it was almost unplayable I decided to build my own. Ive just finished building this CBG (Below) In keeping with the CBG style I've tried to keep the CBox as original as possible. Humbucker pickup and orange drop cap with tone pot and Gibson Deluxe tuning keys. Its sounds superb, the tone is smooth and punchy. Im still a beginner with the actual playing of these 3 strings but I love the alternative style it brings (makes you) play when attempting to put a cover song together. Has anyone got any info on UK CBG events in the North of England ? Also any tips for buying tutorial videos

For a moment I thought this would be a thread about a 3 string tuned C,B,G. I don't think that this is a good tuning! How are you tuning it? I think the most useful is I.V.I. so G,D,G. or A,E,A etc. This give a simple chord that is neither major nor minor, so is very versatile. PT

I have tuned it GDG, it seems most tutorials on YouTube are in this tuning.
I have another 3 string CBG now and plan to experiment with other tunings.
I am finding the lead riffs difficult to fathom after coming from a 6 string background.
Practice makes perfect mmmmmmmm

ChickenBoneJohn is the cigarbox guitar primo on here and elsewhere. Google would be your friend regarding CBJ. You have probably encountered some of his excellent YouTube videos...
I've dallied with the idea of a CBG several times but have always been put off by the ambitious asking prices of cigar boxes on eBay.

Welcome to the forum smoggy!
Adding Justin Johnson for ideas on videos tuition for 3 string. I think he's basically a very serious instrumentalist, and seems to travel around exploring alot of different types of both cbgs and 6 string guitars which he seems to be moving over to from his website photos - I don't remember hearing him sing.
His website lists his for sale learning materials and here's a free tutorial for Walking Blues on youtube, he has one where he teaches chords and stuff on the 3 string, if you are interested in seeing its on his website, and he may have some ideas listed on his set up and equipment. He plays different genres - country blues, a little jazz, rock, slide and non slide. -Harriet

Hi Graeme - I could be wrong but Chickenbone John at www.chickenbonejohn.com/ , Some people like Daddy MOJO in Canada, Justin Johnson in America has a number of small manufacturers that he has demoed in the US but I have no idea whether the CBGs are consistently of good construction or just real interesting to look at - fairly certain that Chickenbone John's are well constructed by his reputation - he repairs some that are sent to him from the US. The very highe$t end I believe on those are Kurt Schoen at schoenguitars.com/ - MM has one of his, but they run into the thousands. They can be heavy, if that is a concern, and I wasn't particularly comfortable holding playing slide on the one I tried - you might want to check out one in person to see how you get on with it. Best, Harriet

Thanks for that Harriet. I'll research over the next few days while waiting to see if it's a passing whim. Think a cheapo on ebay would be best to start with. It's the idea of only having to think about three strings that appeals!

Think I may be in the market for a CBG! Anyone got any tips? Hello Graeme, all I did some webdigging for a distant memory of someone playing an oil can guitar at a festival last century. Found some links to Mac Arnold www.macarnold.com/ and... www.cigarboxnation.com/Now Im looking for a vaccine to prevent me catching this virus... OY! cheers! J

This CBG virus spreads quickly, after being in pub / club bands myself as a guitarist, I discovered the CBG, I can't put it down, its the initial simplicity that drives you mad !!! (its not as easy to perfect as it looks) Im now on my fourth build and can't get enough of the idea !! Be careful what you buy, I bought a £100 quid CBG from ebay and it was nonsense, not even close to being playable !!! It put me back 2 years as I thought it was a genuine CBG and thats how it was, it came with a tuner, instructional CD and a slide, I struggled to play it thinking this is what a CBG was all about !!! NOT SO !!!

Wouldn't advise random eBay purchase, very hit and miss - some people can make them, some really can't. Chickenbone John's workshop guitars at around £130 are excellent, sturdy and set up for great playability. I'd probably avoid piezo pick-ups which many on eBay have, though my first purchase a couple of years ago (off eBay - I got lucky!) has a piezo and is a fine piece made by Washboard Chris who posts on this forum. Cigar Box Nation is the forum to look at www.cigarboxnation.com/I rarely pick up a 6 string anymore, you have been warned...

Yea your right Serious , the ebay experience for me was a disaster, but after being a guitarist it did push me into another level, I actually perfected making my own pickups and the whole CBG guitar itself. This has now become a personal obsession lol.
After being a husband, dad, grandad, and dog walker time is of the essence and I am trying to perfect !!
