Hi there !
I was having a look at Wolfram slides - on their website.
I thought they just did solid Tungsten Carbide slides.
They also do stainless steel slides, and 2 types of coated stainless steel slides - one coated with tungsten carbide and one coated with titanium nitride.
Has anyone compared the coated slides to the solid tungsten carbide ones ???
Not fully sure why I'm bothering to ask as they will probably be far too heavy for my preference !!!
I have a Tribotone slide (not a bar / "steel") - and a find that a bit on the heavy side - so these Wolfram slides are likely to be too heavy for me !
Maybe someone (eg. MM) has had a chance to test all the Wolfram varieties out ?

Hiya Richard! I've tried all of David's range at the London Acoustic Show last year ~ my favourite is the gold coated piece, but all of the Wolfram range are obviously really impressive!! Knowing your preferences regarding slides Rich I can tell you they'll be way too heavy for you - your ideal slide weight is around 50 ~ 60 grammes - the Wolfram range are over twice that weight Slide On! Ian.

Anybody who plays slide on a 12 string gets my respect! Just getting and keeping the thing in tune drives me to distraction. Worth it when you do though!

Hi again !
A demo of Wolfram slides on 12-string guitar with a very piezo'y quack sounding pickup isn't my idea of a good demo.
I don't hear any chatter from the slide on the strings though - it sounds very clean (I do hear string buzz on the frets here and there though, with/without the piezo quack).
I remember last year seeing Catfish Keith play in Edinburgh - on his Ralph Bown 12-string, and it sounded amazing. He uses Highlander pickups for his non-reso guitars, including his 12-string guitar (I know, because I asked him !). Very little if any piezo quack on his guitars - including on his little parlour guitars that he REALLY plays hard. In fact, for at least half the gig, I was purely listening out for piezo quack/distortion, because I couldn't hear any !
I'll be really surprised if this Martin Simpson has a Highlander pickup on his 12-string (and confused) !
Any other demoes around ?

Sorry, I may be being obtuse but that needs further elucidation for my benefit.
"this Martin Simpson"?
MS does use Highlander pickups, always provided that they are available in PRS guitars.

Lol!
I was wondering about these Wolfram's too. My diamond 7mm thick slide is 80g, my king slide slightly lighter. Wolfram's a joyful 100g I'd love to try but should really just get on with it and stop buying things.
Snakehips. I saw a video here I think of you - I swear I met you once, years ago at the first incarnation of the LRC playing the crap out of everything in the house (when I was just begining slide playing, badly). Either that or it was another quiffed Scottish fellow who was handy with a guitar.

Don't worry about your slide--concentrate on your vibrato.

Hi there !
Yes Coach, it was v likely me !!
I spent a 15month period coming down to London one weekend per month, in the early 2000's I think it was. Had an all-day course each Monday, so would come down from Edinburgh on the Friday, stay in London over the weekend, and fly back up to Edinburgh on Monday evenings. Saturdays, of course, were dedicated to visiting guitar shops, especially the London Resonator Centre ! Now, there was a place !!! I had a split-up with the ex-girlfriend (fiance, in fact) in 2003, and the next weekend I was down there, Mel Isaacs (of the LRC) tried to cheer me up by telling me of his marriage woes. Quite funny really (assumng it's true) - he told that me the morning after his (first marriage) wedding, while waking up with his new wife in bed, his wife sat bolt upright in the bed, and declared she had made the worst mistake in her life - and left him there and then, the day after their wedding ! He said he then married another two times - but they both failed. He married a fourth time (can't remember if that was still going OK) - to his FIRST wife !!!!!!!! !

Strange - L bought a NRP tricone in the LRC around that time. There was a Scottish guy there playing a cheap Ozark reso very well, and I wondered if I should buy that instead. I stuck with the NRP though.

Could have been me (definitely sans quiff) until I saw the bit about playing very well.

Hi all,
David (Wolfram Slides founder) here - thought I'd drop in and reply.
We do indeed make a whole range of slides now, using some very cool materials! We've also just launched our first bullet bars (with a diamond-like carbon coated version just finished - you heard it here first!).
I'm working on some better video demos of the slides (the London Acoustic Show video was done at zero notice, taking an audio feed straight from the desk into a Zoom H4n, which may be contributing to the sound quality). It's amazing the difference the surface makes to a slide's performance - my titanium nitride and tungsten carbide coatings are less than 5/1000ths of a millimetre thick, but have a pronounced affect on the tone - the titanium nitride being more strident and a little brighter, the tungsten carbide/carbon being that bit richer and cleaner. While neither can equal the tone, performance and durability of the solid carbide slides, they do come very close.
As far as weight goes, the solid carbide slides are approx. 196 grams; the steel slides (plain and coated) are approx. 106 grams. I engineer the two sizes - medium and small - to exactly the same weight by varying the wall thickness, so that you get the same tone and performance whichever size you choose.
Also worth mentioning, I offer a 14-day no-questions money-back guarantee on all of my slides- if you don't like it for any reason at all, just return it. Let me know if you have any questions.
Happy sliding!
Cheers, David
