Hi there ! Just carefully opened up a recently acquired 1932 National Polychrome Triolian ukulele that was sounding a bit muffled - to find two large dust bunnies. One was stuck between the coverplate and the cone, and the other, about the size of a golf ball inside the Soprano sized uke body. I think it will sound better with a gentle de-dust-bunnying ! The well has an old card gasket glued in. I've not been too pleased with these type of gaskets under the cone rims in National guitars and usually I find the tone and volume improves if removed - so think I will remove it - unless anyone in the know knows they ALL came from the National factory like this ??? The uke cone looks in excellent condition apart from needing a good clean. The tuners need a bit work as they are not holding in tune fully. Here are the dust bunnies : Attachments:

The cone cleaned up : Notice the 4 brad pins, holding the cone to the underside of the uke's biscuit ! Nice !! Attachments:

Just like buying a classic car Snaky--don't be afraid to look under the bonnet instead of wondering why the thing isn't performing as you'd hoped. I've started vacuuming my guitars with the soft brush attachment.Stands to reason that even a fine covering of dust on a cone will affect the sound,or at least the volume.

Those were too big to leave. I like a thin layer of dust and a couple of small dust bunnies on the cone, as they sweeten the tone.

Maybe dust bunnies are only a symptom of sieve / grilled coverplates? Anyone had dust bunnies with dobro coverplates? TT

You get them in Dobros and Tricones. It depends how often you open your guitars. The last time my koa Fine Resophonic was opened, it hadn't been opened for 16 years. A 20 year layer of dust is good!

--Although I have to say Smoke on the Water does sound punchier with a clean cone.

My personal take is I can,t stand them or a dusty cone so anything like that has to go.
What with the dyslexia & cleaning it could be described as a bad case of COD !!!
