Well I haven't actually got it yet but just bought a lovely 1957 Guild X50. I'm a sucker for old archtops and have always hankered after a Gibson ES125 but these Guilds are reputed to be every bit as good and go for quite a bit less usually. I started looking a few weeks ago and when this one came up I couldn't resist. It's the rarer and early model - made in New York just before Guild moved production to Hoboken. It's not exactly collectors condition but I don't mind a bit of play wear at all and I prefer the faded burst to the newer looking ones. I love the faded sunburst (Gibson call this honey burst) and it has the franz pickup that I particularly wanted. I already have an all acoustic archtop with a K&K under bridge pickup so this with the electric pickup should bridge another gap in my collection nicely. They sound really nice acoustically too, despite having a laminate body. On researching the guitar I came across Kenny Brown who uses one just like this, probably made around the same time as the specs look identical. I think it has a great tone on some of his YouTube videos when played acoustically - as well as plugged in of course! The seller was very helpful, he took extra pics under natural light and did 2 video recordings to send me, played both plugged in and acoustically, it made me feel much more confident about buying sight unseen - something I'm always uneasy about! Anyhoo, hope you guys like it and will post a thread when I receive it. Now comes the long wait! Here's a pic:

"So this with the electric pickup should bridge a gap in my collection nicely..."
Hmmm! I recognise that scenario! When I recently purchased a Tacoma built Guild F512, it was to plug the Guild hole together with the 12 string hole. I'm with you though on this one, she's a beauty mitchfit. You have my blessing at least. My problem remains how to tell "Customs and Excise" (or "she who must be obeyed..." -it's still. in the case. "Management" differentiates between guitars, but not black cases- yet! Guilds are not exactly "sleepers"- far from it, but they are better value for money than Gibsons and lose nothing in the quality stakes.
Great catch mitchfit- I'm a bit jealous.

Thanks Stevie, I think you may have got my name mixed up though I can totally relate to your 'problem' and believe me I'll have exactly the same one! Bet your F512 is a beauty. How do you find it? I have good feeling about this one, pretty sure it will be a keeper and I've not even played it yet!

Yup. Bang to rights! (Sorry mitchfit) I cheated a certain auction facility out of a tiny fragment of its ill gotten inestimable rake off. A bit like Robin Hood if you will! It feels a little like you are strumming a grand piano on your lap!

It feels a little like you are strumming a grand piano on your lap! Nice! 12 strings guilds are legendary, maybe I'll expend my Guild collection and go for a 12 string next!

Received wisdom would be to avoid the Corona era Guilds otherwise they're indeed legendary. Sorry for going OT. Maybe I'll start a thread asking for suggestions as to how I can break it in to her indoors...

Very nice guitar. New York City Guild guitars were built by many of the former Epiphone craftsmen. Good stuff.

I've never played any of the original epiphones, I would love to try a masterbuilt, they are supposed to be fantastic guitars and fetch big money.

That'll be it then. The (relatively) tiny screen on a "smart" 'phone only showing the bottom of the post. No excuse though...
