Yes to us in the UK that is a good price, providing the pickup is OK go for it, a lot of power in that unit and changes the way you play.

Lee's right. I've had a Chicagoan for about 25 years - powerful pick-up, great tone, lightweight, pretty mother-of-toilet-seat finish...
I've just sold an early 1950s Fender lap steel with the fabled tele pick-up but kept the National, which indicates how much I like it :-)

I found and bought a cable on Elderly's site but I'm trying to re-solder the original cable so I can play it in the meantime. I'm no solder guru, but it seems impossible to get down into that Amphenol connector to do the job. Seems like the updated versions of the connector have a hinged door kinda arrangement that opens up and allows access. This original one has no way to get down in there...

Do you guys use special lap steel stringsor are any fairly heavy nickel string OK?

You should be able to unsolder and clean out the center hole of the connector and remove the wire. Strip back and insert and resolder the center conductor, then let the braid touch the spring / housing.

Whilst in a music shop recently I was looking for a heavy set of electric strings for one of my six string lap steels, well they were not heavy enough so I bought a seven string set and moved everything up one string.
One solution although everyone has there own take on strings.

Hi Gaucho,
On electric lap steel, I use...
For low bass G & D tunings - 16 18 26 39 49 59
For high bass G tuning - mostly 15 17 26 36 46 56, I sometimes use 16 18 27 39 49 59
On resophonic Nationals and Dobros, I mostly use the same as above, sometimes 16 18 26 36 46 56
I don't like any type of fancy string design...flatwound, plastic coated etc... just ordinary electric guitar strings.
