Heres something to start a debate. Not long ago, I bought a great compilation on CD of Sun Records artists, and I love it. I also have a great Chicago Blues CD which is also ace. I was wondering though, if there are any definative compilations of acoustic country blues or even acoustic slide guitar compilations on CD? I am sure this will divide opinion, or even unify it, but I love to spark something off on this site.

Hi
I won't dare to tell you what is best.. that is very subjective.. but I'll venture a few 4\5 cd cheapo compilations that might give you a taster... off the top of my head, try the set Black, Broke and Blue or Mountain Blues or Paramount Rarities... or have look through the JSP catalogue they have a few and loads of one artist sets.
Better go the food is looking flamable... report back with what you bought !

So many specialist record labels go out of business or discontinue certain CDs, that I am not sure what is around at present. Having spent three years signed to Catfish Records, I have no need for anymore blues compilations! Well not this week anyway.
I was involved with three slide guitar compilations on Catfish. I am sure if you search on eBay or Amazon, you will find them. I will check through my CDs and update this thread a little later.
An absolute classic, although only on vinyl, is the Paul Oliver compilation 'The Story of the Blues'.
Shine On, Michael.

Andy, I have a copy of "Roll and Tumble Blues: a history of slide guitar". It is a 3 CD boxed set of 78 tracks recorded between 1926 and 1999. The first two discs are pre 1940s country blues and just about all the well know slide players are represented (Son House, Robert Johnson, Charlie PatonBlind Willy Johnson etc). The third CD opens with Muddy Waters from the "plantation" recordings then moves through the late 40s and onwards - including a live recording of Peter Green. The set comes with a booklet of historical notes. The CD was produced in 2004 and is still available on amazon for under £12 - a bargin Robn
