Hi all,
I've finally had chance to record my (new to me) MM Blues guitar. It is the first prototype with the serial number (001) - you may have seen a couple of previous threads about it. I did a bit of a mix of blues playing, some single line stuff and fingerpicking, all with a slide to try and demonstrate how good it sounds. No EQ or effects have been added. It was a bit of a quick one take thing so not my best playing!
I'm a bit annoyed as I seem to have lost my zoom recorder so I had to do it on my iPhone! I almost didn't put it up as the quality isn't great, it would have been so much better on my zoom! Anyway, here it is. Hope you like it....

Super. Is it going through an amp? If not, what sort of room you doing it in? TT

Super. Is it going through an amp? If not, what sort of room you doing it in? TT Thanks deuce, no I'm just playing acoustically, though I do plan on putting a pickup on at some point - there's a jack on one of the f holes as the previous owner had a flatbucker on it for a while. I was just playing in my living room with my iPhone balanced on the arm of the chair I'm sitting in. Not very sophisticated - though I think some of the sound was bouncing off the back of the chair! Although I haven't changed the EQ, the recording has gone through GB where I added a bit of compression. I also forgot to mention (I was actually saving it for a different thread), I had the cone changed to a National NRP hotrod. Not that there was anything wrong with the Continental cone that was in it - it sounded great, but with the hotrod cone it sounds brighter and has definitely increased the sustain.

The top string is really wonderful, what gauge is it? As a light string user I can never get that 'solid'. PT

Thanks for the video, and I always enjoy your playing.
I noticed that you have a video on youtube with you playing a Gretsch Honey Dipper, and the song is "Dark is the night."
Since you have both guitars, do you mind if I ask which sounds better to you? I know which sounds better to me, but since you own both I thought I would ask.

PT Thanks Pete, I have a 15 on the top string, I'm using the Newtone MM strings, I think they're 15-56, really liking them so far. I did have a 13 on it when I first got it and the 15 definitely thickens up the tone.

Thanks izzy I actually sold the Gretsch some time ago so unfortunately I'm not able to do a direct comparison, and I only have my memory to go on - which isn't great! Pretty sure I prefer the sound of the MM Blues, it seems to have a fuller tone, especially now it has the hotrod cone in it. I've always regretted selling the honeydipper though, it was a lovely guitar. Those Gretsch resonators are really nice IMO. I remember the V neck was super comfortable and I did like the sound, I just sold it to fund another guitar purchase as I wasn't playing it much at the time - always a bad idea and I had a feeling I would regret it! I prefer the more classic look of the MM Blues, how it is closer to a National with the body shape and the slotted headstock. The perloid headstock on the Gretsch always bugged me a bit - I know that's superficial! I did try out a wooden body Gretsch (the alligator I think) in a guitar shop recently (just out of interest) and whilst it sounded nice, it felt and looked quite a bit cheaper than my honeydipper for some reason, Maybe I'll buy another honeydipper one day. I can't see me selling the MM Blues, though. Really enjoying it.

Thanks for the reply 5slide, and the comparison (from memory).
All of us probably have a story about selling a guitar and later regretting the sale. I certainly have one of those as well.
