Ok ..Tricone's £500 ish
I have never played one but am i correct in saying that the "common" material is brass? Sound wise how different are they to steel and having a Steel MM would a steel tricone sound "different" enough?

Hi Jon,
Tricones should be brass or German Silver. Steel Tricones are something that NRP introduced as an option. IMO, steel not does work well as a Tricone because it loses its richness, warmth, sustain, overtones and one or two other characteristics. NRP steel Tricones have a sound, but it is not really what I would call a Tricone sound.
A steel Tricone is a totally different sound to a steel single cone National-style guitar. A good single cone steel bodied National-style guitar is louder, fuller, bigger, richer and in my opinion... better.
I hope that is helpful

Thanks Michael .. the reason for my question is that Ian Siegal has just bought a sub £500 pound steel tricone that e reckons is the best copy he has played ..the company in question also make brass ones.

Hi Jono,
Well it is all personal taste, but the reason there is not a Tricone with my name attached is because I am (a) finding it very hard to create what I call a Tricone in the mid-price range, and (b) because I have never seen a far-eastern-built Tricone that comes anywhere close to the real thing. By the 'real thing' I mean 1920s and 30s Tricones.
One of the problems in the design is that the sound wells are not built to the correct specs, so there is no stability. Sure, they can sound sweet, but not when you A-B them with the real thing.
I have known Ian for 25 years, maybe more, and I respect him as a person and as a musician, but on this occasion I don't agree with his opinion. Well, if we all thought the same, the world would be very boring!
