You could always stay using the pick and do hybrid / flatpicking. TT

Hi Jono,
You just have to start from the beginning and at your own pace, build it up.
Sometimes when I teach the basics of fingerpicking, and in fact fingerpicking patterns, I deaden/mute the strings with my left hand and I teach percussive patterns with the right hand on the right strings. So for example... thumb on bottom E string playing 1 2 3 4 and index finger playing the top E. Think of your thumb as 'tick' and your index finger as 'tock', and start doing things like 'tick tock tick tock', and then change it to tick tock tock tick tock tock....etc... Do simple exercises that keep a percussive plunky sound going and build up your patterns ....thumb, finger 1, finger 2, ......thumb finger 2, finger 1 .... do the patterns on different strings. When starts to make some sense, try playing simple melodies out of the chord ....something in C is a good shape to start with....
Hope that is helpful
