Hi Malc,
My apologies for not replying sooner, but I have only just spotted your post.
Thank you for such kind words!
The drone sound on that occasion sadly was not made by two tampura players that were out of shot, it was coming from an iPhone app called iTabla Pro.

Great performance. I like the sitar type of sound...can't see how his guitar is equipped. I am wondering if you or any of your friends has played the Danelectro baby sitar or any of the similar instruments and their opinions of such...

Hi fredcapo, Thanks! The instrument Manish is playing is a Mohan Veena, which essentially is an arch top guitar adapted to play Hindustani classical music. It has 21 strings of which only 3 are melody strings, these are tuned D A D. The rest of the strings are sympathetic, or drone strings which are tuned to the scale of the piece of music being played. These sympathetic strings ring out notes in harmony with the melody notes and make the whole thing sound very sitar-like. The only strings played are the three melody strings. The Indian-ness of the sound is not created by the instrument, it is totally created by the musician. When I play the Mohan Veena it sounds completely Western and when Manish plays my Tricone, or single cone guitars, they sound 100% Indian! It is so evident that we put this into our live shows and swap guitars for a demo, audiences love it as much as we do. The Danelectro Baby Sitar is pretty much the same as a Coral Sitar. For those that don't know... they have plate under the strings that makes the strings whine in a bit of an Eastern way. No, I don't think Manish has played a Danelectro or a Coral, he doesn't really need to, as he makes that sound on any guitar. Before picking up the Mohan Veena, Manish played regular six string lap steel guitars, which he has done since he was a young child. Manish Pingle with his Conchord Mohan Veena Shine On Michael
