Am I seeing right in the lower pix? Did the low E slip out of a slot in the saddle or is it just positioned on the edge of the saddle? Looks odd to me.

Thanks for the help, I'll get that bit off the tailpiece at the weekend and go from there.
The E hasn't slipped out, I think it's just how I've taken the picture.

Haven't been here for a while so I'm coming in late on this thread. Firstly, Michael's quite right, the Continental cones are very good - much better than Chinese cones used to be. I think you still do get an improvement from fitting a National cone but the difference is relatively small and I'm not sure the upgrade is worth the expense these days.
Looking at the photos, that's a very small break angle. If you really feel that you must have some padding between the tailpiece and the coverplate then use a bit of stick-on felt, which is much thinner. I've seen thick pieces of leather under tailpieces on squareneck dobros, but on those the break angle isn't an issue because the action is about 3/8" anyway.
