Hi Jono,
I would recommend that you put some time into learning some basic chords and scales in open D and G tunings. I am sure you will find it very useful to have some knowledge of playing in open tunings without a slide. This is something I believe is very important, because this basic knowledge will serve you well.

This site never ceases to amaze me, yet another wonderful song of which I was not aware. Now I've got to learn it but with my voice you'll not want to hear me sing it. Thanks guys - keep 'em coming.

It is a Tom Russell song that has floated around the West Texas musicians since the late seventies when it was written.
This is a great recording of it by Joe Ely....
...and this one by the writer, Tom Russell..
I don't know if he still does, but Tom used to tour over here in the 80s & 90s.

This West Texan stuff reminds me of my late Dad. He went out to WSMR in New Mexico in 1957 and came back with a few amazing records from El Paso and Las Cruces. I can't remember who they were by but it was the first time I heard slide guitar. They disappeared when we moved to Germany later in the year, but when I hear this type of music I think of the Scottish soldier who really wanted to be an old time cowboy.

West Texas has been a hot-bed of great writers and performers for a long time - Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jesse 'Guitar' Taylor, Tom Russell, Townes Van Zandt, Jimmie Bowen, Guy Clark, Delbert McClinton, Roy Orbison and of course, Bob Wills. Thinking of these artists reminds me of the Cricketers at the Oval and the Radcliffe Arms in Oxford back in the 80s and 90s. First time I saw Joe Ely was in the 70s with Rory Gallagher and then with the Clash. I haven't seen Joe for a few years, but it is always good to catch up and hear some great music. That whole scene is one that I am very familiar with, I recorded the Rhythm Oil album with Jesse back in 1991. Gallo... is on this set list of Joe's. Photograph by Alan Messer ©2014 Shine On Michael
