I want to go with Open A (EAEAC#E)...Open G one step up.. Will this hurt the neck/cone on my National resonator or acoustic guitar? Thanks....

Might be easier for people to respond if you told a bit more about what weight strings you are using. I only play on parlor sized guitars so what I do would be irrelevant.

I have a short scale resonator that (in Spanish) I can tune up to open C GCGCEG, BUT the top string is a 0.011. My long scale (27") has 0.15 top and this is fine in E in Spanish (BEBEG#B) I would snap strings if I went up to A. So, what strings and what guitar??

Hi
Sorry to hijack your thread but have been meaning to ask the same question myself but hadn't got round to it yet but seems like a perfect opportunity. Trying to achieve the same as the OP but on my Toon Charlton, short scale length (24.5") and 11-52 elixir nanoweb strings although I may change to a different set of 11-52 strings as the elixir's are not great for slide but it's what they came with.
Many thanks David

Any reason why you don't use a capo? (Just curious)

Don't want to capo because I can't hit the chords higher up the neck

Jazzbass12,
Your guitar will withstand any tuning as long as you adjust your strings accordingly. 16/56 is an unbalanced set if you are using low bass tunings. It works really well with high bass G tuning which is what they were originally designed for, but not so good in low bass G.
If you want to tune higher to E and A , use slightly lighter strings because while the guitar will withstand the extra tension, the strings and your hands may not. So I would go a bit lighter.
Having said all that - just give it a try and see how it feels.

David,
I would get rid of the Elixirs, I can't stand them! Plastic coated strings that last forever, but their tone is compromised.
If you want to go heavier on your acoustic, I would check with the maker. Certainly 12/54 should be absolutely fine.

Thanks Michael, much appreciated. I don't mind them for finger style but I will change them just for slide anyway. I'm using it primarily for country blues so the 11-52's work well for me. Thanks very much though, I have tried it a couple of times and it has been fine but just wanted to make sure I wasn't damaging anything!!
Open a works much better than g on my guitar though just because of the extra string tension.
Many thanks David

Thanks Mike, How do you think my National Wood Body Resorocket (single cone ) with 013 017 026w 036w 046w 056w would withstand with changing to a Open A (EAEAC#E) on stage? Just wondering if I might break a string. I jump around from Standard to Open D and now I want add Open A. Thanks

Hi Jazzbass12 It won't hurt your guitar to tune it up to A tuning, but the only way to find out if it will break your .26w is to try it! Good luck Shine On Michael

Hi Jazzbass12,
the safest way to go would be using an unwound third string, probably a .022 will be fine. You could not like the sound at first, but it won't break during the tuning changes!
