Hello forum this is my first post. I am an oud player, guitar player and music therapist in Canada.
Been playing guitar for about 30 years and oud for about 15.
About two years ago I became very intrigued with resophonic guitars, I bought a Republic Hwy 61 and have been enjoying that as my primary music therapy and touring guitar since.
A friend has lent me his National Resophonic Resolectric in hopes that I will buy it from him. It is a really good price, sounds great, and is in great shape.
I have some questions about it.
1) I think it needs a bit of a truss rod adjustment. I understand that the direction of turn depends on the year it was made (pre or post 2005- is that right?). The serial # on it is 11748. It is the sunburst style resolectric with the highlander pickup and P90 and three way selector. How do I determine the year it was made (the seller does not recall exactly how long he has had it) so that I can turn it the right way ( I don't want to start turning the wrong way and then untiring etc. )
2) I have never owned (or played) a guitar before with P-90s. the P90 on the resolectric can be noisy (60 hz hum) in many conditions. I understand that people who like P90's like them enough to just put up with the noise. If I keep this guitar I would hope to be able to use it on recording sessions. Will a simple noise gate do the trick? OR Can I adjust the 6 screws in the pickup to bring them closer to the strings so that I can turn down the volume on the pick up a bit ( and the hum) but then have more gain b/c the pickup screws are a bit closer to the strings? Is that a good way to improve the signal to noise ratio?
3) this guitar is set up really well for slide but very poor for finger style standard tuning playing. My Republic guitar is set up really well for finger style and rather poorly for slide. Any tips on getting a compromise set up that is good for both ways of playing? or does everyone who does both have dedicated guitars for slide and finger style ?
4) what do people think is the best string gauge for playing primarily standard tuning fingerstlye but doing some serious dabbling in open tunings (Open D and G) ? The guitar came with 16s , I changed them to 12s (with a 14 on the high E string like my Republic) but they are still to hard to play (which is why I think it needs a truss rod adjustment to lower the action a bit) , should I just trying lowering the action a bit with a gentle truss rod adjust or should I go to 11s (or even 10s).?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this topic.
