Found this on local Craigslist. No photos or description, he only sent me a video. I've attached a screenshot below. Looks like a Model 19 with a UFO cover plate? I couldn't find it in Mark's book. I'm encouraged by the fact that he's playing it finger style (tho badly) and that it appears to have fret markers passt the 12th fret which would indicate a partial neck stick. He is asking $250 for it!

Nobody? I'm going to look at it on Monday. Guy says it's a Dobro but there are no markings or serial #s. He said he thought it was from the 50's but I don't think they were being made at that time? I'm thinking it's some sort of 30's Model 19 or 25 variation. I've seen that cover plate before, but not on any of the smaller bodied models. Looks very clean for a '30s guitar, but I can't think of any "copies" of these that I've ever seen, other than the modern Gretsch versions. I'm thinking for $250, if it has a decent tone I'm going to go for it….

I reckon a model 5 or 6 - maybe with a newer coverplate, although as it says in the book about "production of different coverplates ... for medium sized orders". If it is a model 5, maybe it has the titchy 8" cone? TT

Hi Gaucho, It is difficult to be sure from that photo, but it looks like a model 19, or a model 5 as TT has already mentioned, which would have an 8 inch cone. For $250 you can't really go wrong. Shine On Michael

Thanks for the info, knew I could count on you guys! I missed the Model 5 blurb in Mark's book. Seems likely. Here is a different photo where you can see the hand rest a bit more clearly. The cover plate looks like it's designed to accommodate a spider (hole in handstrap and recessesed area leading into and out of the bridge, plus it looks like its the 10" size. Did they just slap a cover designed for a spider on the 8" biscuit cone and make it work? I'd prefer that it be a spider, but for $250, I'll probably get it…. Attachments:

Go for it! It is a Regal built guitar. The coverplate is era correct, so I'm pretty sure it is original. I'm not sure how you could even prove that it wasn't. Not that common on wood-body guitars. But they do show up from time to time. The fret markers suggest a dobro-style neckstick, which to me, would suggest a standard (probably stamped, lugged) cone and spider. Spruce top? For $250, take the chance. I sure would. The pieces are worth more than the total price. When all is said and done, that could be a very fine guitar.

It's very close to this one; called Regal unknown model number (in Gruhn's book). Available in 41. It's mine.

Toremainn, that looks very similar. The one I'm looking at has a slot head and judging by the fret dots below the 12th , a partial neck stick. Can't get over to check it out until Monday. Is yours a spider (4 arm or 8 and stamped lugged cone?) or a biscuit? How's the tone?

gaucho, it's a regular spider. I've been working on it for a while. Straightened out a banana neck and probably will have to do a neckreset. It's playable and sweet, but still not perfect. It will be.

Gaucho I am jealous, looks totally awesome and I love the spider pix. The 8 legs Toremainn posted I don't remember seeing before! A work of art IMHO.
Hope its ok and to hear a sample posted soon.
Congrats! H
