A few months ago I inherited some records from a neighbour who unfortunately passed away. Amongst them is an album called "On top of a mountain" by Stephen Wainwright. The album is nice enough, some nice folky ballads and soft rock, not particularly special but nice listening nonetheless. What interested me was that in the sleeve was a letter from Stephen Wainwright dated 18. march 1982. My neighbour was a radio DJ, and it seems he was sent this copy in order to score some airtime or an interview.
I can't find out anything about this guy on google other than that he recorded this album in the early 80s, can anyone here enlighten me?
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,
I have never heard of Stephen Wainwright, or his album, On Top of a Mountain.
At first I thought he might be a part of the Kate McGarrigle / Loudon Wainwright dynasty, but Stephen would be far too old for that.
Sorry, I can't help you.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Michael, I originally thought that too, having thiught about it while skimming through the LPs looking for something to play, but his letter revealed that he was from the midlands!
Chris, thanks for the info, it's sad if he has in fact died, I guess that migth explain the complete absence of a trace of him online. I gues the sadness is compounded by the fact that i inherited his record from someone else who passed before their time.
I will check back if I come up with any concrete answers.
Matt

Well I know where the English Stephen Wainwright lived...in 1982. How hard can finding him be?

I met Steve Wainwright (that's his stage name) and stayed with he and his partner Jen in SW of UK early 1981 after a chance meeting. Took me to a local pub (in his Citroen 2CV) with a real folksy scene, and he did an impromptu gig. Not a shy guy! I bought a copy of Top of a Mountain album and brought it back to Australia with me. He had recorded this with backing from Waterfall, another folksy trio with lovely lilting sound and nice lyrics. "Steve" was just starting out and was v.keen to gain airtime on radio and establish a career as a recording artist. Retaining contact is / was difficult as this was way before email. Had not heard of him passing away, so would suggest that's subjective. He was only around 30 back in 1981. Would love to find out more and discover if he is in fact still going!
