Well I arrived in Nashville for my shoot today and headed out to Gruhn's and Carter's (excellent suggestion Michael!) to fondle some vintage Nats and Dobros. Both had a good selection on hand to play. I really liked the "vibe" of Carter's (which is just a few blocks away from Gruhn's), a very cool place! Played a bunch of vintage resos, but the one that really spoke to me was a custom NRP that was made for and owned by Danny Flowers (who wrote "Living on Tulsa Time"). It seemed to be an Estralita Deluxe body with rope binding and a solid, pearloid headstock. But instead of a biscuit cone it was a spider. It also for some reason had clear plastic sealing off the F-holes from the inside. It was on hold but I put my name in the pot if the buyer doesn't come thru. It played and sounded great but I bet it would really sparkle with that plastic removed. I'm sure it was there to pull back the highs for recording. Oh and it looked fantastic too!

Just stared reading `Escaping the Delta` by Elijah Wald. Several places that sound of interest when in Mississippii (that is how you spell it???) Anyone been to the Playboy Club in Greenville?? (I don`t think it has Bunny Girls) or to Bobo (nr.Tutwiler) ? PT

Pete: 2 s's, 2 s's, 2 p's, i's always singular. Blues seems to be big business. Can't get a room within 37 miles of Clarksdale for the Juke Joint Festival, might have to go in May instead, still might be less touristy. Next 2 Blues Cruises are fully booked to.

Just a thought, but if you're not doing the Juke Joint Festival after all, you might do worse than aim at the 10th Anniversary North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic (26th & 27th June, 2015)

Ken if you can book this place, it is just outside Clarksdale on the old Hopson plantation. Old sharecroppers shacks fitted out for tourist stays. I stayed in the old silo. Wonderful place run by a couple of real characters. www.shackupinn.com/A couple of photos from my stay My room, the toilets had all had paintings by local artists (the shorter guy in the previous photo did this one, Stan Street, he has a gallery in Clarksdale) Highly recommend it, old cotton gins, all sorts of stuff. That's a good selection of photos there, Ken. Thanks for sharing!
What was your biggest eye opener of the trip?

THanks for posting the photos.
If you don't mind me asking -did you speak with Kenny Brown, you have a photo of him playing. What did he play?
And similar for the photo of Pete looks like he's jamming playing a harmonica - what was that of?
Looks like a super trip, seeing all those gravestones, markers or signs together like that is touching.
Best, Harriet

Thanks Ken,
Did you go on an organised trip or do your own planning?

I'm shocked how run down it all looks - like it won't even be around in a few years time. TT

It looks a lot better than it did 30 years ago, they've cleaned up some of the tourist areas.
The truth of this has never changed and the music we all love comes from a place that is not at all pretty. There is nothing romantic about poverty, impoverishment and deprivation. Somehow, out of all this we got an incredible gift, African-American music.

There is another set of photos that I took (basically the same as Kens ,but not as good) Ken did an amazing job booking stuff etc. I just tagged along and soaked up the atmosphere . The pic. of me on harp is in `The Blue Room` with Jimmy `Duck` Holms. He also tried to show us some `Hill country` stuff, with alternating 4/4 2/4 bars or maybe you could call it 6/8? a bit like Smokestack Lightning My pics are still downloading, but I`ll post them here as soon as pos.
