Hi oldmanblue,
You should be able to see how Rory played 'Too Much Alcohol' in this film without needing the TAB.
Open D tuning / standard open D tuning blues runs / a flat pick (plectrum) for the authentic Rory rhythm approach / the chords are straightforward, 4 and 5 chords, + the D minor at 2:12 (1st string fret 7, 2nd string fret 8 and bend both) / + a pile of energy!
Sadly, the subject of this song was a catalyst in his early death.
Shine On Michael.

My pleasure! I hope my post was helpful. If there are any parts that you are not able to see or work out, please don't hesitate to ask me.
Here is the complete performance from RTÉ, I think the quality is better on this one.
The world of TV has changed a lot since 1977. Can you imagine a TV show today where an artist plays two songs and retunes his guitar on camera.
Does anyone with Rory Gallagher biographies know if that was filmed on RTÉ's 'The Gay Byrne Late Late Show'?

Hi Michael, I don't think this set was for the 'late late show' but rather a dedicated short music show called 'me and my music'..produced by RTE and filmed in Dublin in the mid-late seventies. There is a clip of Rory playing 'out on the western plain' and being interviewed by Gay Byrne from the late late show around 1987, Byrne's interview style can come across as condescending sometimes but that's just the way he was

Great footage, his 'stompin at mother blues' record is fantastic.. (still love Rory's version though)

The RG irish tour 74 (electric) version in my opinion isn't much cop, but the reso versions technically are amazing. JB Huttos versions all kick butt and I love them, but they are not virtuoso in any way. They might as well be two different songs, neither worse than another. But there are people who will claim white men / women can't play the blues as well as a black man. Another thread maybe... TT

I don`t feel virtuoso make something good or sometimes worthwhile.I think Hutto is amazing.I love Rory saw him many times he was always great and give 110 per cent. What you like best is individual choice but virtuoso for me is not equal to good all times.

Pundit's corner.
JB's Too Much Alcohol was based on Leroy Carr's song Straight Alky Blues, itself well worth hearing:
