Hi, Can somebody take a look at this video and tell what tuning he is in? I tried Open G and D (with and without the capo). I cant figure it out. This one of the closest versions I have found of this great song...
Thanks In Advance!!!!!!! Rich O

I'm no expert but it seems like some version of spanish tuning. I play "Write me a Few of Your Lines" (same song basically) in Spanish key of F.

It sounded like open G when I first heard it. I put the capo on #1 on a guitar of mine in open G and it sounds the same as the chap in the vid. Sorry, but I think its a pretty average version... TT

A good effort from a young man, nice voice! Got to the end of this clip and noticed what I thought maybe an extravagant claim on another clip, so clicked on it, not so extravagant perhaps. Love to know what others think of this, I'm an absolute novice player and easily impressed, but is this not very cool?

Thanks for the advise on Frisco...OPEN G, DUHHH on me. I feel a little dumb that I couldn't figure it out but,I'm still new at slide (my disclaimer). Fred McDowell's thumb is amazing once you try to figure out what he is playing. Years ago I was studying jazz bass with an old guy who played with Fletcher Henderson in the old days. He told me "learn and grasp what I teach you and then forget about it when you play". It took my awhile to realize what he was saying. Same applies here, dont over-think. Listen, learn it and then just play it.

Yes played out of spanish tuning as was Fred`s.As for close version of song they come no closer than Fred`s origianally.I think when learning it is better to always learn fronm source. They don`t come much better than Fred !
