I'm recently getting in to lap style "Celtic" so I have put a nut raiser on my trusty "Blue"! Currently I'm in open D. My question now is, using Newtone 15/56 strings, will it put too much pressure on the biscuit cone? I suppose ultimately I will build a square neck Dobro for lap style as I am now missing playing "Spanish" style slide!

Hi Keith,
Using a nut raiser and tuning the guitar to DGDGBD and DADF#AD will not make any difference to the string pressure on the cone, in fact it could lighten the pressure. However, I think you are asking about tuning it to high bass G tuning, GBDGBD with MM Newtones 15/56?
If you are tuning it up to GBDGBD it should be absolutely fine, as long as you don't have too much break angle from the bridge to the tailpiece. If you do, put a wedge of wood under the tailpiece to lift it so the break angle is shallow.
I have tuned many single cone guitars to high bass G, and as long as the cone is not old and fragile, the guitars are fine.
One thing I would point out is that with a round neck guitar, I would not leave it in high bass G tuning all the time, just in case the neck can't take the stress.
When I first got into lap style Dobro & Hawaiian playing I had an OMI Dobro 33H, which I would tune from DADF#AD up to GBDGBD and back down again, all in one gig. Never had a problem. Back in 2008 when I launched the MM guitars range, I put a BLUES and a LIGHTNING through as many rigorous tests as I could and one of the tests was to tune them up to GBDGBD with 15/56s and leave them that way for a couple of weeks. They were fine. I have tuned many guitars that way, but I wouldn't do it on a guitar with fragile old cones.
Have fun!

Thanks Michael, You've answered my question completely, I was meaning GBDGBD tuning. I think my construction is up to it, I dont have an adjustable truss rod in the neck but it does have a 12mm x 6mm steel bar running through it! Break angle is very shallow and it's a newish continental cone. I was just a little concerned about all that extra tension on the bass side of the cone!
