and a National Hot Rod? I know I read that one of them is slightly taller. Are the biscuits the same thickness? Getting ready to drop in the lightened Hot Rod and just trying to get an idea of the amount of adjustment I'll need to make in the bridge height to keep the string height the same.

Just try! I keep a few ready-to-go biscuits in different heights all the time for quick testing.

If you could let me know the difference when you find out it would be much appreciated, I have a hotrod on the way for my Republic.

I swapped out several years ago maybe this info helps calculation - the Republic biscuits I swapped were a little taller (1/16th+) than the national. BUT the saddle sat at about the same height from the bottom on both - it varied on the republic biscuits how deep that slot for the saddle from one biscuit to another was. The continental biscuits on mine did not fit in the hotrod cone. Here's side by side comparison - the national was a practice biscuit

Be interested to know people's opinions on sound differences between the two. I read a few proffesionals stating that they reckon the Continental's to be so close to NRP hot rods that they reccomend to not bother changing if you don't need to.

I read a few proffesionals stating that they reckon the Continental's to be so close to NRP hot rods that they reccomend to not bother changing if you don't need to. I'd agree with that, especially with tricones. I've made the swap a couple times and haven't noticed a big improvement. They sound a little different but not necessarily better IMO. I wouldn't bother to make the change, based on personal experience. In this case, I modified the Hot Rod cone (I have 2 in my closet that I took out of vintage Nats and replaced with a vintage cones (now that's a tone difference that I do notice and definitely prefer) trying to get more of a vintage tone out of them. That's a whole different thread about sanding/lightening cones. If it doesn't work, I will have no qualms about putting the original Conti cone and biscuit back in. This is for a Hwy 61 Republic (steel, 14 fret) by the way. A really fun, good sounding and playing little guitar. I'll report back and maybe post some sound clips...

Pulled it apart and made the switch today. Sounds good, definitely not any worse. It sounded pretty good before so I'll let the cone settle in for a few days before I decide. Initially, the sanded HR sounds really good, but more like a regular HR cone than a vintage. I realized after I started (when people started to respond to my inquiry) that Michael had been talking about sanding a pre-HR NRP cone, which was heavier than the current Hot Rods. Definitely doesn't seem to have had any negative effect tho.
For those that were curious about the height differences, the HR measured 3.1mm and the Conti was 2.9mm to the peak with no biscuit. The biscuits are pretty much the same thickness.
