I've never realy liked the cover plates that are available for the self builder to buy so I decided to have a go myself! 250mm dia 1mm thick bare steel As above with 1st attempt at hand rest in place And the same but in galvanised steel These were totaly hand marked, cut and hammered but I've found a local sheet metal shop with CNC lazer / plasma and water jet cutters so I'm working on CAD drawings now!! I realy like the hammered finish though! Any thoughts from the most friendly bunch or reso lovers out there? Like or not like!!

Hi there !
Nice new design. On a practical point though, those soundholes are big enough to lose you fingerpicks in, mid-song. You could put grills underneath, like Tricone coverplates have - or perhaps something else that has similar effect.

Hi Keith,
From doing my own personal tests I have found two things that I think are worth sharing....
The bigger the holes in the coverplate, the less I like the tone of the instrument.
The best coverplates for my taste, are brass.

Love the hammered finish look. Quite a bit of work involved in getting it to that point, so well done. I also think if you stick with that size sound hole, that a gauze covering would set it off. Could experiment with different gauze materials as well maybe? Would love to see you produce one out of brass like MM suggested. I think a hammered finish in that would be awesome. Good job!

Thanks folks, nice bit of feedback there! good points about the soundholes, these were done with the one and only "Q-Max" hole punch that I have, (although I do actually like the look) the CAD drawings that I've done to take to the metal shop do have smaller soundholes. These first attempts were realy to see if I could hammer the dome myself with hand tools, and to show the guy in the metal shop what I'm trying to achieve! I had thought about nickel plating the raw steel ones, Hadn't thought about brass but I guess that could be nickel plated. Bare brass would have to be lacquered otherwise it would tarnish so quickly! I didn't really want to mess around with gauze, (would that be done before or after plating I wonder)? Here are pdf's of my designs, (nothing too new here)! Hi Keith,
Funnily enough before you posted the additional designs I was wondering how much effort and what it would look like if instead of circular holes they showed the phases of the Moon.
I like the hand beaten finish.

There are brass coverplate `blanks` that drummers use...... PT They come ready shaped, and some drummers will have an old one they will give you! or you could do something fancy .....
