Hi Andy,
For ease of use and an affordable loop pedal, the Headrush is excellent. There are others that do more, but for me the Headrush takes some beating.

Hi Andy,
I use an RC-2 because of its simplicity, I used to have a twin pedal Jamman but it was too complicated for my needs and I could never remember how to use it properly! The RC-2 also has a built in drum machine. It also has a solid pedal to give you a good chance of coming in and out at the right time. For me it is pretty much just for pumping 12 bars in and then jamming over.

Thanks for this so far, but it seems its a real dilemma out there.
The Akai is good, however it seems like it has a short sample time.
The Boss seems to have issues with its switching by many accounts
Was looking into the stripped down Ditto but that seems to have reliability issues too.
Hmmm!

The Headrush is pretty cool, (check KT Tunstalls "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree" to see how to use it!). I tried one, but it's got just too short a sampling time for what I wanted, so I've bought a JamMan Stereo and am enjoying exploring what it can do..or rather what I can do with it.

I recently bought a Ditto looper. New for £105. It's so tiny it needs external power since there is no room in it for a battery. It is very intuitive in use .

The first time I saw a looper being used with a guitar was Jimmy Page with two Wem Copycats in the early 1970s, then Robert Fripp in 1977/78... He used two Revox reel to reel tape recorders linked together with one reel of tape. One machine recorded and the other played back, the distance between the two machines was adjusted to change the length of the loop. Being around and hearing various avant garde musicians in the 1980s... BJ Cole, Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser ...etc, they were all experimenting with loops and weird sounds. Then a few years later in 1993/4, I saw Rainer Ptacek using a Digitech loop pedal with his National guitar and getting some great sounds out of it. Katie's Black Horse record was big one for the loop pedal industry, especially for Akai! It is a great pedal and very simple to use, but the loops are quite short. There are some amazing loop pedals available, but be careful as they are really not easy to use, especially on stage in the middle of a gig.

Andy I've had an RC2 for years but I've only recently started using it for live use. As it stands it's great a backing band for practice, but with the adition of a double footswitch it'll get over the 'double tap' to stop problem with the single pedal bosses. I think that the only thing that is missing is a dedicated switch to both end a loop and start an overdub. If you want to borrow an RC2 for a play you're welcome to have a blast with mine for a week or so. Bob.

I use the Strymon Timeline which is a fantastic bit of kit as it does all sorts of other things as well.. The only issue with it though is that the loops have a maximum of 30 seconds the same as the Headrush. This is not enough time to loop a 12 bar blues or any other tune who's chord sequence is longer than 30 secs. To overcome this I am thinking of using a Ditto Looper to supplement the Timeline. To make good use of any looper you really have to learn to be spot on with your timing. To hear a real master of the looper its worth having a listen to Bill Frise. His album's East West and The Intercontinentals are brilliant where he uses a Line 6 delay looper among other effects. all the best Malc

Michael: Re Headrush pedal.
Can the guitar signal go to the pedal via a mike or does have to go through a pick up? As your post refers to Rainer using one, I don't recall that he had his National electrified.
Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Using a little mixer you can plug a mic and/or a guitar into the Headrush.

Hi Michael,
Any recommendations for a small mixer unit?

Hi Chris,
There are so many around that you should look at. It only needs to be a cheap mixer, something with 2 or 4 inputs would do you perfectly. Have a look at Maplin's website, they often have really good and cheap mixers.
If anybody can recommend a good mixer for Chris, please let us know.
Thanks,

Hi there!
Anyone tried a Roland RC3 looper pedal? Seems like you can record up to 99 loops, and recall any of them - and even move loops to and from your PC.
I once tried a looper pedal ni a guitar shop - but couldn't really get the hang of it (getting the loops to sync properly without glitches in rhythm) I suppose I just need to try again.
Had a few cool solo gigs last weekend, at the Dundee Blues Bonanza, that went really well. Did a 1hr solo gig which turned into 30 mins extra, then was asked by the pub owner to do an extra set. After a free meal and an additional £100, I agreed to do an extra 1hr - he he ! Didn't really have an extra 1hrs worth of solo material though !
Have quite a few 1-chord type boogie tunes that would be cool of I could get the boogie pattern to repeat, and add stuff on the top. As I play piano and guitar, I was just thinking, reading this thread, that perhaps I could record a piano part on the fly as a loop, and add guitar stuff over the top - or vice versa.
Just thinking on here - Elmore James' song "Done Somebody Wrong" needs the left-hand piano riff and then the slide guitar stuff on the top. Maybe I could do that if I had a loop pedal able to record a full 12 bars of music !
Mmmmm. Interesting !!

I like the way Belinda Gent (bemusic) works with her looper pedal-this is from 2011 I believe - she does a bunch of overlays. I thought it might be of interest appropos the thread:
