OK, I've never uploaded any files of me playing before. I'm only doing it as a comparison between the Hot Rod and the vintage cone in my Duolian. I'm really not a musician, the first instrument I ever touched was the first resonator a got about a year and a half ago. I've not had lessons, can't read music or even TAB (though I haven't tried). I've just always loved bottleneck blues and these instruments, so I just listen and try to figure stuf out. With the disclaimer out of the way, here is my '32 Duolian with a Hot Rod (was in it when I found it) and with a vintage National cone. The vintage cone came in my '31 Style 0. It was crushed, but I reshaped it. It rattles in the Style 0 but seems to work in the Duolian for some reason. I think they both sound good, with the Vintage having a different tone on the top end. I'm happy with either one, but there is something pretty cool about a vintage National with all vintage parts! Be kind! Hot RodVintageEDIT: On the "vintage" link, I say it's the Hot Rod cone, but I made a mistake, it is actually the vintage. Stage fright....

Hi Gaucho,
They each have their own quality and both sound great. I can see that the old cone has character and i could easily live with that, but maybe the NRP cone is giving more sound and a fatter tone.
Nice playing. If you have only been playing for 18 months, you are doing brilliantly. Really good! You certainly had no need to pre-warn us with a disclaimer. I wish I could do that when I make records!!!
Best wishes,
Shine On Michael.

Thanks Michael, that's very kind. I'd feel really good about the progress I've made in the short time I've been playing, if I could just keep my thumb going a little better. As for your comment on the cone, normally that would really mess with my head and I'd be tempted to go back to the NRP. But I have a '92 Radio Tone (I know, more instruments that I should be allowed!) and it has a very similar tone to the Duolian with the HR cone. I really do like the extra "twang" the vintage cone gives the top 3 strings (treble).

Hi Gaucho,
That makes perfect sense. As I said, both sound great and I could easily live with either.
You are making great progress with the playing. No worries there, just keep on doing it.

PS> The new V5 software allows us to use different fonts..... (not sure about the new smileys)

Hi Gaucho,
Thanks for uploading those - a treat as I hadn't heard you before. Liked the second one a little better - it seems more of the nuances are caught in the recording.

As already said here - No need for excuses! Guess it´s personal which cone sounds the better, but to my old ears the Vintage has more clarity and the tops sing more. The Hot Rod may have some more bass, but in comparence with my Tricone HR´s,your single HR sounds kind of muddier . A quick A/B test may not be the whole truth though.Evaluate over time, maybe some overdubs/together with another guitar? keep on picking and sliding
