I remember reading a similar article in a magazine, I think it was Living Blues in 2008/9. There was some talk around that time about Ike Zimmerman and how much RJ learnt from him. I don't remember the Living Blues article going into as much detail, so this is good.
Interesting....

Shine On Michael The whole Zimmerman thing started in the early 70s when a cassette was circulated of said Ike Zimmerman singing, as I recall, one RJ song. This had been acquired by Nick Perls in New York and no further info was ever forthcoming. As I recall the news was received with yawning rather than yearning.

That is true. I remember the talk of a cassette, but nothing came of it. I doubt if much will come of this, but it is interesting and probable.

The history of our favored music and instruments is one of the most enjoyable aspects of it

I've got a trunk full of cassette recordings going back to 1969. Hopefully the Zimmerman tape might be there. If so, and not perished, I'll mp3 it. Also, I vaguely recall lots of talk but my little grey cells ain't what they were....

I would love to hear a recording of Ike Zimmerman. Get in that trunk and dig out the tape!

The above link doesn't work. Is it the same article as this one I read last night? www.academia.edu/2408177/_Ike_Zimmerman_The_X_in_Robert_Johnson_s_Crossroads_Living_Blues_2008....this makes a lot more sense than the "Crossroads / Pact with the Devil" Legend to me. I had a look at Beauregard, MS on Google Earth based on the geographic details given in the paper. Look for yourselves - find East Avenue and then cross Beauregard Rd to the north side and you're in the cemetery. Voila! CROSStheROAD and Ike tuned RL's guitar before handing it back - I suppose I'm going to be called a spoilsport now. AlanB - did you ever find that tape of Ike Zimmerman playing?
