Does anyone know if VAT or import tax has to be paid on an old instrument purchased and imported from an EU country, either freighted or collected and brought back through customs?
Cheers

actually I'm not strictly right there!
If you buy privately you won't pay VAT.
If you buy from a VAT registered dealer you will pay VAT to them, this can be got back from customs (at their end) but then you will have to pay it again bringing it into the UK. It's simpler just to show the receipt and show that you paid VAT at source.

AFAIK, VAT should only be payable on the profit element of a transaction when considering second hand gear of any age. As much as anything, this ought to be dependent upon a declaration of profit from the seller. Therfore this amount is difficult to ascertain at the time that VAT is charged / paid. I paid no VAT at all when I imported a second user Heritage guitar from the States, but I did have to pay Customs and Excise the import duty of give or take 5%. Perhaps someone has an alternative experience or can say with authority otherwise?
