I just acquired a Recording King resonator in a ghastly green VERY cheaply. Ive stripped off the horrid paint and before i put back together am wondering how much of a difference a national cone replacement would make and where apart from National can I get one in UK?

HI What sort of recording king? I guess its a 14 fret 'duoilian' type metal body, cos they are rotten colours. I'd say get a continental cone, and you should be able to get them from Robin at Busker guitars, or maybe John Alderson, Andy Solloway or Chickenbonejohn? Or ebay! TT

Try www.daveking-acoustics.com - they claim they stock original National cones. I don't know if they ship, and what is the price. At elderly.com (U.S. based) National single cone (biscuit) costs 80USD + 10USD shipping + VAT upon delivery. I would'n expect that DaveKingAcoustic is cheaper. It definetely costs more than Continental cone but it worth as National cones are the best. Regarding Recording King - I also recommend you to replace nut with bone. Karlos

I guess your looking for good value for money rather than 'the best' though. TT

In the past I've bought cones direct from National and it wasn't crazy pricey to buy and have it sent to UK.

Thanks everyone. Interesting, Ive just had a long chat with Robin @ Busker Guitars who doesnt think that a National Cone would necessarilly improve the sound (pound for pound) on a recording King. They use Continental cones which are OK. Where he says the real improvemnt is in the biscuit!

I would agree with Robin here, a Continental cone would be fine. A good set up, new strings, a bone nut and replace the biscuit bridge and saddle would go a long way towards improving the sound.
The cheap pressed cones in some resonators are pretty awful, they do nothing at all for the sound of any resonator IMO.

I did a Continental for NRP Hotrod cone swap and was unimpressed with the difference.
