@ Blueshome Thanks for that!
I don't know whether this makes any sense to you or goes along with the document but I saw a youtube film where Johnny Shines spoke some. He was asked about that and he answered that it was because RJ didn't want the men recording him to see what he was doing or how he played. The linked document says he was shy at the session but he was a street performer whose livelihood depended on him not being shy, so maybe Shines had a point?
Can't find the film though (:
Peace, Harriet

The story about RJ facing the corner because he was shy has always been known to me.
The 'corner loading' that is talked about by Ry Cooder and many other people who know of this technique, may have been intentional, or it may have been an accidental stroke of genius. Either way, what we hear on those recordings is 'corner loading' and it is part of the sound of Robert Johnson's music.

I love to sit on the counter in the bathroom and play into a tiled corner. I think the film Harriet is referring to is this one:
If you haven't see it in awhile (or ever!) it is definitely worth the hour!

gauchoI love that film, with John Hammond, Jr. I couldn't find the dialogue I mentioned though. There's a couple Shines is in and he was interviewed in paper and audio as well. if it turns up, I'll update. The document Blueshome linked to was real interesting. I also play in a corner but facing out, and my apt. has cement walls. Some times of the day its louder than others. Peace, Harriet

Rather than have folks leaving the forum to read the letter, I have posted into this message. This letter circulated about twenty years ago, Mark Makin sent me a copy when the Columbia double CD was released. I know Chris Hunt's John Hammond Robert Johnson film, although I haven't seen it for many years. Although it feels like a recent release, I reckon that film was made twenty years or so ago. Here's the Don Law letter.... Shine On Michael Attachments:

Really interesting... I'd heard all these rumours ideas on that same Youtube documentary. I've asked Father Xmas for the Escaping the Delta book, should be an intersting read Attachments:
